The damage was pretty extensive the have footage of the impact and how close it was to the tournament, luckly no injuries.

But in the end the Gopher escaped

It wasn't a dummy, but an actual AIM-7, just not armed. I suppose the pilot received a 2 stroke penalty?

Why would they be flying around with live missiles (into a civilian airport too)? I know the AIM-7 is cold launched, but can it be jettisoned like a tank or load of bombs, or is this definitely a technical malfunction?

I think he also has to play it where it lies....

"The Canadian Prime Minister announced this morning that Canadian Forces yesterday launched a pre-emptive invasion of a golf course near western Canada. The Minister said that Canadian intelligence agencies had recieved information that the golf course, which is overseen by Greens Keeper and kept under control by the Republican Marshalls, had recently aquired Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Canadian Forces began the daylight assault by droping a missile on the 8th Green of the course, a known hotbed of golf activity. Canada's tank brigade, consisting of the 1st Tank platoon was massed at the border awaiting the order to move. Forces of the Republican Marshalls were believed to be moving their heavily armoured golf carts into defensive positions."

I don't know the whole story, but from what I've read, technically, it could be an Inert missile. No warhead, or propellant, but seeing as how the place is still closed, it probably was a live missile, that was not armed.

I'm not sure if the Canadian markings are the same as the US. If you see a picture of a US fighter and the missiles have blue rings, they're inert, if they have yellow rings, they're the real deal.

The ordinance is pretty safe as long as it isn't armed, the stuff gets dropped, bumped, you name it from time to time. Any missiles that can be hung on a fighter can be jettisoned like a tank, or bombs, (in the event of an emergency and you need to lighten the load).

It probably was some sort of malfunction, whether it be mechanical, or pilot error. Sometime between fall of 2002 and spring of 2003 an F-117 accidentally dropped a practice bomb in West Texas onto a house. It's amazing at what, when, and how stuff has fallen off of airplanes over the years.

I thought the USAF had gotten away from just having the blue rings on their missles, and painting the bodies solid blue after that little incident up here about ten years ago, when one F-15C out of Elemendorf came real close to shooting down his wingman with a supposedly "Inert" round.

The USAF still uses the rings. Here's a link to a photo off of the air force's webpage of a flight of F-16's taken this past week:

The near F-15 shootdown happened on March 19, 1990, so a little earlier then I remember. But what I remember happening was that one F-15 put a Sidewinder into his wingman on a trip from Galena. A/C made if back but the Wing commander for some odd reason got relieved over it.

I have spoken to a couple of guys that where on Elmendorf working armamenents at the time, and apparently they (the air force) got really big clearly marking practice munitions. I can't imaging why either.

I can only speak for the Hornet, but the only stores that can't be jettisoned are the AIM-9's on the wingtips. Everything else can "be gone" with a touch of a button.

I asked one of the pilots today to be sure, the F-16, you hit jettison stores, and you can say good by to your wingtip missiles too.
