RAF Tristars - Where To When Retired?

G'day,

I am wondering what, if anything, is planned to happen to the RAF's 9 Tristars when they are retired as the A330s come into service. Are there any projections of how much airframe/engine life they will have remaining when they are retired? How are their reliability statistics at the moment?

Cheers,

V/F

The 6 ex BA ones have been so extensively modified for tanker/transport it's hard to see any civil users, one of the ex PA ones is not in use but for spares, the other two are in a pax config.
The ex BA ones were only a few years old when the RAF got them, they had not been greatly utilized up to then.
They'll probably all be scrapped, but won't be replaced until around 2010-11, the VC-10s will go first.
The RAF are well used to successfully operating old aircraft, look at the VC-10s.

GDB is correct in saying the retirement date is about 2010-11, but after reading a report in the sunday times the other week, this may be delayed due to contract problems with the consortiom supplying the A330. And the whole deal may be scraped in favour of the Marshall aerospace bid for converting ex BA 767-336 instead or opening the tristar/vc10 replacment for tender again.

My understanding is that it would have been cancelled if EADS had not satisfied MoD by June 24th, now the RAF is moving to what they wanted, buying the aircraft rather than all this PFI bollocks.
BA are commited to keeping the 767's for now, in fact stored ones are back in service and being modified with the 'Dusk' interiors.

Talking of the VC10's these were certified for 60,000 Hrs.

According to my estimates, they must all be over 50,000 Hrs and some must be about 57,000 to 59,000 Hours already.

In that case it seems hard to believe that they will last until 2010.

Does anyone else have thoughts about this.

GDB

Do you know which ex Pan Am Tristar is being used for spares.

given the number of parked Tristar's, has the RAF considered buying some for spares.
