Just a question to anyone who may know the answer. I live near Moffett Field in the Bay Area near SJC. I notice quite a bit of fighter jets operating into and out of Moffett, particularly on weekends. The majority of times they are F-18s. They are great to watch as they zoom over and then come back around to land after performing the tactical overhead at Moffett.
My question is, are these aircraft operated by Navy pilots who have family in the Bay Area and are on a weekend pass or something like that and are visiting the area. I figure the aircraft are probably from Lemoore NAS which is in the Central Valley. Could be some other location, maybe Miramar or Fallon.
Any info would be helpful. I know that the only aircraft based at Moffett (which used to be a NAS, but is now just a Federal Airfield) are C-130s and some helicopters. And of course some NASA aircraft.

I am in Redwood City and I heard quite a bit of action around noon today from down there. I know of a guy, don't remember which branch of service, who would basically commute up here from somewhere in SOCAL to attend graduate school at Stanford. Not a bad deal! I believe the National Guard has part of the field, but regarding typical operations I am not informed.
On a side note I recall there being talk of the airport opening up for public use. Is anyone aware of the standing of this? It would be nice to use those long runways instead of what they got at SQL and PAO.

If you can ever get close enough to see, or get your lens zoomed far enough in, let us know what's on the tail..numbers, logos, etc, that'll tell you alot. It could quite possibly be a training hop destination, or just an x/c stopping point, who knows. If it's pretty regular, they may be cycling dets out of there for some reason?
Could be from Lemoore, or Miramar, Fallon, or even some 'Lant Wingers, like Oceana or Beaufort. The two letters (ex- AG, NG, VW, etc) on the tails would help alot- they'll tell you what airwing they're from, and will likely point you in the direction of their home

I try to get the latest news about it from time to time but it's always the same stuff. You might already know this, but Mountain View residents voted no on allowing cargo flights into Moffett in the late 90's. I think the city of San Jose is still trying to get Moffett to be a public use airport.
The Bay Area airports are all at capacity, a centrally located reliever sounds like a great idea. The only other alternatives I have heard about were a new North Bay Airport, or allowing commercial service into Travis AFB and building a high speed rail to the Bay Area (sounds just as expensive as building a new airport). IF Moffett became an airport with commercial flights the economy in that area would enjoy even more money coming in... it would be like the dot com days! hehe
I used to fly from PAO all the time and always thought it was a waste to see those runways at Moffett unused
