recently Boeing and Alenia's Aeronavali division have signed an agreement under which the Italian Company will be responsible for development and conversion of a dedicated tanker and transport variant of the 767.
This follows a recent announcement of some Italian Air Force's Officiers about a preference towards the 767 rather than the A310 as the future Air Force Tanker.
Currently the AMI (Italian Air Force) operates 4 former Air Portugal B707 converted in TT (Tanker/Transport) but these have a lot of limitations because of noise compliance.
As an order for 4/6 B767TT is more than likely in short time, it is also possible that Italy could order the AWACS variant of the 767 and this could open the way to more Countries that are in the process of choosing a AEW aircraft.

Well, it could be a possibility... AMI is still looking for a AEW plane (much have been discussed over the E-2C), but now the supposed B767T/T bid could lead to choose the AWACS variant of the B767; since it's on operational evaluation by the JASDF much of the work has been already made. But sincerely I doubt it comes in the near future, with AMI involved in EF2000 programme, C-130J/A400M/C-27J, new tanker programme, F-16 leasing, not to speak about the European link of the Defence opposed to the more American link of the industry...
maybe in 2010, or so, if money are found.

nice to see yet another Italian guy in this forum.
You are right, it is basically a matter of money as for any other Air Force in the world. All the programmes you mentioned are expensive and it is unlikely that the AMI will place an order for AEW in the near future.
But the need is still there and such an assett is much more needed today than when the air defence role was held by the glorious Starfighter.
Probably the new Centre-Right Govt. will boost military fundings in some years if it will last enough.

There are many Italians who likes this forum, but are to shy to write in it!
For what I've heard/read (on newspaper and so), the new governament intends to spend more on military forniture, basically to upgrade the old equipment we still use (not only the F-104...). Part of the deal would be to stimulate Italian defence industry, wich has a big growth potential in every sector but has always low development rates due to our restricted defence budget. If the planned increase in stated-backed project will go on, then we could also found a stronger defence industry within 5/10 years, otherwise we will still use in 2050 the EF2000...
