I have some correcting to do on my own photos in the database.
I know they had Charlie models the last couple years. A simple check on scramble showed they went back to Alpha's... El Centro and Traverse City both had the 'A' model.
Just a heads up in case you were interested or had photos in the database showing them as having the 'C' model.

Hmmm, I had always understood that they had some of the oldest Hornets on the books, A's and that #7, a B model. Do you know if/when this change back and forth happened? Where'd the C's go?

Maybe into active duty? Seriously, why would the Blue Angels need C models? The enhancements to the C models are only really useful in a combat scenario.

My understanding is that the BA no longer have any backup birds and it is thought that they will soon be receiving early productions E & F models. Just a rumor I have heard a lot on both east and west coast.

There's no way in hell the Blue Angels are getting brand new Super Hornets. The A models are lighter and better suited for what the Blues do. Like N328KF said, the differences between the A and the C are mostly weapon systems and avionics. The airframe and engines are essentially the same with the C having more computers and therefore a little more weight. I'll give that the A's are getting old and the C would be a good replacement but we have plenty of A's out there that still have some life left in them. Since the Blues do absolutely nothing tactical (just great formation flying), give those aircraft to the squadrons who need them.

Early production E's? There's almost no such thing right now, they're so new.
One of the 1997 Blues, Lt Mark Dunleavy, #3, was my dad's old squadronmate (VFA-131). When we met him after the Seattle airshow one time, he goes "We pride ourselves on flying the oldest Hornets in the inventory"...so I wouldn't assume otherwise.
I'll admit even some of the earlier lot C's are getting a little long in the tooth- VFA-86 is flying some of the earliest ones, all equipped with the A's ejection seat, the SJU-5. Probably mid to late 80's construction. But then there's the lot 19 birds, which still have alot of work left on em. Either way, I think it'll be awhile before we see the Blues in a C model, and that'll be after they gut it of all the excess weight!

Well, I know a couple years ago at least, they did have the C/D model. From hearing what the air wingers say, the Charlie and Delta version have more problems than the Alpha and Bravo's had.
