LMT Overcomes F-35B Weight Issues

Per AvWeek, today, Lockheed has managed to nix over a ton of weight from then F-35B. It was about 2,200lbs overweight, before. They also increased engine thrust. USAF is now going ahead with their F-35B purchase, constituting "several wings" or "hundreds" of aircraft. The USAF version will have some differences from the USMC F-35B, such as internal cannon, larger wing, and a different inflight refuelling system.

Thanks for posting this N328KF so the media battle for the new stealth fighter begins. Looks like LMT is calling in its markers with AW on all that advertising it does in the mag. Personally I don’t care for the X-35 anymore than I care for the X-32. This concept of a single aircraft for all the services (and a single engine aircraft especially) makes no since to me. I don’t remember what the original cost of the F-22 was but I’l guess it was suppose to be at are little more than the F-15 (guessing $47E6 to $50E6) and now it is at $165E6th (I know the article say $130E6th but I believe the higher number is correct). The extensive cost over runs with the F-22 should have taught the USAF something about cost control and flexibility in the role of the aircraft. So LMT is saving weight by reducing the weapons bays I am sure that will give the Marines a warm and fuzzy feeling as well as those other nations who hoped to by a version of this aircraft that as it was 1st conceived when they joined this joint venture.

Actually the USAF aircraft you describe is the F-35A. The B designation refers to the STOVL variant that will be purchased by the Marine Corps and RAF/RN. The F-35C is the U.S. Navy variant, designed for carrier based operations.

Actually, you're the one who is incorrect. The USAF CTOL version is the F-35A. The USAF has elected to acquire modified STOVL F-35Bs in addition.

Stepping in to back up N328KF. Back in March the USAF announced that it planned to split it's order of F-35As into a yet-to-be-determined mix of F-35As and F-35Bs.

Actually, what will be interesting will be if the DoD is able to adapt a laser to the F-35 airframe. AvWeek had a writeup on it, and if you Google for "F-35" and "laser" you will find some references. Basically, you take the F-35A or F-35C, and in the space where the lift-fan goes on the F-35B, you instead place a generator and the laser equipment. AvWeek was estimating 2010 when the article came out. Who knows. At least AvWeek is more reliable than PopSci/PopMech.

To support what others have stated the USAF has decided to split their order for F-35s into two, they will order the F-35A (conventional take off and landing aircraft) as planned. However they are going to convert some of their orders for the A model to the B model (STOVL), they will utilize the B model in close air support roles to replace the A-10.

They like the option of having close air support aircraft operate from small makeshift fields like the Marines have done with their Harriers during both Iraqi conflicts, during the Gulfwar the Marines were flying missions from PARKING LOTS closer to the conflict.

As mentioned the USAF's B models will differ a little from the Marine's verison, like using the Boom refueling method compared to the Navy/Marine Corps hose method.
