One thing which Mike Melvill hinted at was that he may have just moved a control a bit too hard over.
SS1 is in many ways quite a traditional aircraft when it comes to control systems. No FBW, but more importantly no dampers/envelope protection/etc... So the pilot is in VERY direct control and if he so much as twitches at those speeds, stuff happens fast.

P.S. The forum gods say this topic does not belong in civil aviation. I tried to explain it was probably the biggest thing to happen to civil aviation this decade to no avail. I hope it's not a european bias thing....
