I was a sales manager at a Mitsubishi dealership in Atlanta close to ten years ago. We had an old guy come in with his daughter to purchase a car and he was quite distressed about it coming from Japan. I had to explain to him that not only was the car division partially owned by Chrysler, but that the car she was buying was made in Illinois by UAW workers. He looked at me and asked "so you're saying that if I buy her this car that I will be supporting some American worker and an American company?" I said "Yes...absolutely". He thought about it for a minute, and said "Well, if it keeps our companies buying their companies and puts our folks to work instead of theirs it must be hurtin' the bastards. We'll take it." He spent the rest of the time there beaming in satisfaction at having gotten in one last blow against his old enemy.

I declined to enter into an economic debate or let the guy know that Japan is one of our closest trading partners, or one of our closest military allies, or that the industrial alliances were good for both of us and that we had mostly made up to each other for the war

His daughter explained to me when they arrived that he was a marine veteran of Guadalcanal and Tarawa who had been on a transport heading to Wake Island when it was overrun by the Japanese, and had never forgiven the Japanese for some of the brutal treatment rendered to his friends who had been captured. He was not happy with her wanting a "Jap Car" as he thought it a betrayal. Not much I can say bad about the old dude, he still felt what he felt and I was just happy to have helped this guy get some extra satisfaction.

Is my Pan Am ticket to the moon still good?
