What role does McGuire AFB play in todays USAF? How many squadrons are based out of McGuire, and what role do their aircraft play? I know that they are receiving C-17s but the overall number seems very small. With such minimal numbers, why not add a squadron to another C-17 base?

How many squadrons are based out of McGuire

Two Wings are based at McGuire, the 305th Air Mobility Wing, and the 108th Air Refueling Wing (NJ ANG). Assigned to the 305th are the 2nd ARS ("Second to None"), the 6th AS ("The Bully Beef Express"), and the 32nd ARS ("Linking The Continents." The 2nd and 32nd fly KC-10A Extenders, while the 6th flies C-17A Globemaster IIIs. The squadrons assigned to the 108th are the 111th ARS ("Tigers") and 150th ARS ("Bet on Us") and both of these squadrons have transitioned to the KC-135R Stratotanker.

It's actually 3 wings at McGuire;
305th AMW, 6th AS, 2nd ARS, 32nd ARS
514th AMW, 76th ARS, 78th ARS, 732nd AS, 514th AES, 714th AES (the associated reserve wing)
108th ARW, 141st ARS, 150th ARS, Det1, Det2
21st EMTF (Expeditionary Mobility Task Force) which is part of the restructured combination of the 15th and 21st NAF into the 18th NAF
621st AMOG
AMWC (Air Mobility Warfare Center), a masters level Mobility school and evaluation / test squadron, and Raven school for the SP's
33rd Flight Test Squadron (tenant of AMWC)

As far as role, McGuire is the only active duty Tankers east of the Mississippi and north of Georgia, so we get a lions share of "Jams", or high priority short notice tanker taskings. We are transitioning back to an Airlift hub with the C-17 after a lul between the C141 reduction and C-17 addition. Our AMOG and EMTF's support mobility base infrastructures at deployed locations, mainly CENTAF right now. The AMWC is a schoolhouse for AF Mid and Senior mobility commanders, and performs operational test and evaluations of new and emerging technologies and tactics prior to implementation in the AMC force structure. They also teach Air Base defense courses and the Raven Teams (Security Forces that accompany aircraft to certain remote locations). McGuire also serves as a point of embarkation for contract carriers (as does all AMC bases) and as an anchor base for Operation Noble Eagle and European air bridge operations. The two AESs (Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron) have been supporting the casualty evacuation from Iraq / Afghanistan to Germany and US since OEF/OIF began.

Hope it helps,
ChD

As far as numbers go, I believe McGuire has 32 KC-10s, 20 KC-135Es, apparently one C-32, and right now 5 C-17s (with up to 13 or 14 total by year's end or early 2006).

Reading the original question all I could think of was that classic SNL line from 1991;
