The USS Kearsarge (Amphibous Assault Ship) carries a marine detachment along with all their equipment (tanks, helo's, harriers, etc.) and deploys these units to the front, whereever that may be. All I know currently is that the Kearsarge set sail from Norfolk at 7AM this morning destined to the middle east. God Bless all aboard.
Just wanted to let all those aboard the Kearsarge know that we will be praying for a safe voyage and a safe journey home.

I was on the Bonhomme Richard for Iraqi Freedom. We left in Jan 2003, and came back in July. It was pretty nice though. The Bonhomme Richard was commissioned in '98 so we had a nice new boat. We got to stop in Guam for 4 days, Bahrain for 4, Sydney for 5, Brisbane for 4, and Pearl Harbor.

i've been hearing the Norfolk based Amphib. assault ships go on a 3 month deployment just to drop the U.S. Marines and support equipment to Iraq and head back back home...I guess most of the guys on board provides the intel if they were to go on a 6 month deployment....I remember we had a few marines that were on my deployment on the USS John C. Stennis last summer...in fact...only saw one Marine GunnySgt and alot of college NROTC midshipmen....ahhh, memories....we got to see Canada, Alaska, Japan, Hawaii x 3, Malaysia, and Australia....great dream cruise for me.

That was us alright! Do you have a larger scan of that beautiful pic? I couldn't take a pic like that because I was on the boat.
