I libe about 30 min from the old Griffiss AFB in NY. Was this a super active place back in the day? I know that B-52 and F-16 were there but what else? What is going on there now? I have yet to go check it out.

Griffiss was home to the 49 FIS flying the F-106 Delta Dart. I was there for an airshow in Sept 1986 that featured the Italian Frecce Tricolori. It was one of the better airshows I have attended. The 49th disbanded not long that event.
Thought not photographed at Griffiss, this is one of the 49 FIS interceptors.

Griffiss AFB, NY was home of the 416th Bomb Wing with one B-52G squadron and one KC-135A squadron, as well as the 49th FIS. The Rome Air Depot was also there.
After Pease AFB, NH closed, the 509th AREFS moved to Griffiss AFB, NY and both tanker squadrons converted to the KC-135R.
As Griffiss closed the 509th moved again to Whiteman AFB, MO (without their aircraft) to re-activate the 509th Bomb Wing and start to equip the wing with the B-2A.

Today Griffiss, is an active airport, and soon to be more so. The Onieda County Airport, (UCA) will be shifting operations from UCA to RME. A heavy jet maintenence facility 747's etc, has moved into the old air depot hangars. The fighter alert sheds are still there, unused of course. and the tower still stands but the Griffiss AFB lettering has been removed.
Rome Labs and NEADS are the only military present.
The former alert area and most of the ramp areas to the south are closed off. The tanker ramp has piles of soil, most likely contaminated. The Maintenance ramp and parking ramp clear, but unused. you can drive right up to the wing hangars and get a great sence of how huge thiese hangars are. The alert ramp is there, but the alert building has been torn down.
The weapons storage igloos on the other side of the base are there, some reused by businesses, others are open and you can walk right through them.
Most of the base has been reused. I was last there in October of last year and it is a far contrast from the last time I was there in 1994. Although I still feel like I'm doing something illegal everytime I base the old gates onto the base. The first few times you drive around the base, and I mean literaly you can drive almost anywhere on the old base, you get a strange feeling but, it is worth a good sunday drive to take a look.
