I Saw My First B-52 Today!

I was in a parking lot in Round Rock, Texas, when I noticed a very loud jet. I looked towards the usual flight routes in the area, but saw nothing. Finally, I looked up and saw it. The B-52 was flying around 6000-7000 feet. I was elated! This is a highly unusual sighting for the AUS area. Made me happy!

This reminds me of one of my favorite ATC jokes/stories:

An F-16 pilot calls up approach and asks for vectors to final for an engine overheating. The approach controller says, "Unable, there's a B-52 on final with an engine out." To which the F-16 pilot states, "Yeah, the dreaded 7 engine landing."

They are an amazing sight for sure. I taxiied out for takeoff at NUC (Navy San Clemente island in a Cessna 402 once, and when I called tower they said to hold short - GCA traffic on final. I sat there for a minute looking downfield and when I turned back to look up final there was a B-52 just going missed off the practice GCA. Right overhead at 200', belching smoke and shaking the whole island! Loved it!

If you ever catch one on static display, just check out the size of everything.

I saw one when I was 12-13 years old. Amazing to have to have help to touch the wing gear!! It also made for a great spot in the shade  Smile

That is one truth about airshows - the big planes are popular on hot days. I've seen half the crowd packed into the shade under the planes.

There was a great picture in the Sacramento Bee back in the early 70s. It was taken at Sac Exec Airport (KSAC) of the planes parked in the tall grass of the infield and as far as you could see were jackrabbit ears sticking up out of the grass in the shade of the planes.

Saw my first B-52 just over 2 years ago going into Alconbury at the time they were flying bombing missions into Iraq. Funny feeling to see an aircraft in the UK that has just been on an active mission.

I vaguely remember a story of an F-4 and B-52 formation in south-east Asia, the cocky F-4 jock brags that anything a B-52 can do he can do better. After a while the B-52 captain says can you do that? The F-4 jock looks at the B-52 and sees nothing different, just cruising along. "Do what he says", "We turned off two engines a while back" replies the 52 Captain.

When I was a kid at summer camp in New Hampshire, a B-52 flew over the camp at around 3,000 ft. I had never heard anything that loud at the time, and I haven't heard anything that loud since. Something about the B-52 seems to project hugeness and malevolence.

Speaking of the size of the B-52, I think I read somewhere that the B-1 actually has a greater payload capacity. Is this correct? Seems hard to believe.

A common load for the B-52 in Vietnam was one hundred and eight 250 lb. bombs. That is a 27,000 lb. payload after taking off from Guam and flying to VN. Of course they would not all fit internally, so they were also hung on pylons under the wing. So a fight of, say, 18 of these guys would drop nearly a half-million pounds on rice paddies near the target.

I watched one "arclight" mission so near the airfield that the shockwaves fluttered our clothing like a gusty wind. It missed the target by about half a click to each side, but still had a body count of 1.

A couple of Huey Cobras were returning to base and saw the B-52 strike going on. They waited until it was over then flew in along the treeline for a closer look. One VC came staggering out of the trees shaking his head. He looked up and saw the Cobras and made the mistake of pointing his rifle.

Anyway, the B-52 strike was an awesome sight. It sounded like someone was tearing the world in half.

P.S. Since my first post I realized that I've flown a plane (A-330) that is heavier (513K to 505K lb.) and larger (197'10" to 161' wingspan) than the B-52. That astounds me as the buff is still what I think of when you say "large" airplane.

Yeah SlamClick, the B-52 often gets described as so 'big' or huge', yet if you've seen it at a fairly well stocked airshow it isn't nearly as impressive as it may seem at times. Its roughly the size of a B-1, though the B-1 stands taller, the C-141 and KC-135 are nearly its size while the KC-10 and C-5 dwarf it. And the long gone XB-70 was much bigger, though never saw service.

Yet, for a bomber it is very big, and I think part of the equation is that the B-52 is the biggest 'mean looking' airplane. Out of the ones that share its size or are bigger, the B-52 is definitely much more intimidating, has huge chord wings, smokes like a bastard and how few planes ever served with 8 engines, yet alone 8 smoke belching jets. Its still an awe inspiring sight, one I've been thrilled to see on several occassions, even though it has larger brethren.

I think the unconventional look to the BUFF makes it so imposing. Here is an airplane that left the factory clean and slick. Today it has "grown" new appendages and gained wrinkles. Either way it is a beautiful airplane.

Still one of my favorite aircraft, grew up near Griffiss AFB so many open houses were spent looking at their G's. I then took an orientation ride in a KC-135 in 1993 just after the 416th converted to the H and before the closing anouncement.

I've always said it: The XB-70 was the most beautiful thing man ever made out of metal.

I was privileged to see one in flight. Late summer of 1965 at Fort Ord California, one passed overhead in a sweeping left turn back down towards EDW. It was at low level for such a machine, maybe ten or twelve thousand feet and must have been gulping JP at a staggering rate. A group of forty or so of us looked up and gasped.

Not to get off topic, but did you spend much time at Ford Ord, SlamClick? I spent 2.5 yrs out in Monterey, back as they were closing the base...pretty sad to see such a big base fall by the wayside. The airport side of it is now a civilian field for the city of Marina. Ahh, memories. Anywho  Smile

Yeah HT, I've had lunch under its wing back in the mid 90's when it was in the post WWII aviation hangar, near the B-52 and OVER the Blackbird and X planes.

And my love for the Valkyries looks, power and grace go back as far as I can remember. It is truly a gorgeous, sexy airplane.
