Togo's army says it has seized combat aircraft from a former French policeman living in the capital, Lome. Two MiG-23 planes and two Mi-18 helicopters had been found from Lome airport, a military spokesman said.
An international commission is probing the origin of military materiel used by Ivorian forces in the bombing of a French base in Ivory Coast in 2004. The spokesman said Togo would never be a transit zone for ammunition and arms for Ivory Coast or other countries.
The government has asked former policeman Robert Montoya to explain the origin and planned destination of the military equipment. Army spokesman Maj Moise Oyome Kemence said the government had carried out a search at security companies owned by Mr Montoya December after Togolese Defence Minister Kpatcha Gnassingbe issued a complaint against him.
An international commission based in Lome is investigating the origin of military equipment used by Ivorian loyalist forces in the attack on a French military base at Bouake in Ivory coast in November 2004. Nine French soldiers and an American civilian were killed in the aerial bomb attack.

Ivory Coast was supposed to have a few MiG-23s in addition tot he SU-25s that were damaged after the attack on the French. Not much was seen or heard of them after the incident... did they wind up here?

I assuming they are talking about Mi-8 or Mi-17s. If that is the case, those are common run-of-the-mill helicopters in Africa and can have both civilian and military purposes. The Mig-23s, though... Does anyone know if they were in flying condition? Keeping those birds on the air mustn't be easy...

If you can find him a Mig-23UB that is airworthy and legal I'm sure he'd be glad to. He has about 800 hours of flying time for the Bulgarian Air Force on Mig-15, L-39 and Mig-23. I dont have any patches but I'm not lying to you. I can maybe ask him for some document of proof but he lives in Bulgaria where as I'm in Chicago so it would be kinda hard to get one. He hasn't flown on a Mig-23 in over 3 years and just keeps a pilot status right now by flying the L-39 a few hours a year. He is mostly an air traffic controller now and is based at Graf Ignatievo airbase. Unfortunately he wasn't chosen to continue flying and get trained in the Mig-29.
