Short trips. Airports too small to handle a 747.

I thought the secondary presidential plane that was used for shorter hops or smaller airfields was a Navy Nightingale (DC-9) ...I remember on TV seeing film of Clinton flying on that to Nantucket once. Maybe they've retired that too.

Hi Jordan,
When GWB visited Lacaster Pa, they only have a 5300ft rwy, so the 757 was used instead of the 747.

FYI, ANY plane that the president is flying on is designated as Air Force One.

The president is feeling the pinch of higher fuel prices.  Smile

Two engines suck less gas than four.... yes it took him that long to figure that out.

It was an Air Force VC-9 not Navy.

I think Condi uses the 757 too. I saw footage of her and Laura's trip to Africa and it was on a 757 similar to the one pictured above.

He now uses the "rocket" 757 because of it's ability to climb very steeply and avoid enemy missiles.  Smile

There is a fairly large fleet of aircraft...I've seen the plane pictured above at LGA. Bush, Cheney, Powell, Rice, etc all use different aircraft depending on where they are going.

No. Any Air Force jet the President is on is Air Force One. When he landed on the aircraft carrier in 2003, it was Navy One.

I have to say that I'm not a huge fan of the 757's darker blue's transition from the belly up to the nose. It looks "clunky" to me. On the 707 it works perfectly and on the 747 it looks very good, but not as good as the 707. Just an opinion.

AFAIK, it usually serves as Air Force 2 with Cheney. The great takeoff performance really comes in handy when the big guy's on board!  Wink

When you post those pictures, the terrorists win.

Oh, and when he's on the marine helicopter, it's Marine One.

Anyone been to the Air Force Museum in Dayton? They have a big presidential plane exhibit. And out here in Camarillo there's an old presidential prop plane slowly being restored.

Huh? It's no secret that the President can use any Air Force airplane. And those blue and white aircraft aren't exactly unmarked. The big "United States of America" on their sides kind of give them away.

We had one of the 757s here at CWA when W was on the campaign trail in 04.

I believe our runways are inadequate for a 747.

Isn't one of the old 707s scheduled to go on display soon at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley?

I've seen the 737BBJs doing touch and goes at both KOA and ITO quite a bit in the last couple of years, they seem to make it to Hawaii fairly frequently.

I am not sure, but is seems that aircraft that were initially certified for civil and commercial operation (ie 707, 747, DC-9, Gulfstream, etc) and that are used by the government to haul government/military personnel tend to be in Civil Aviation forum. These governmental useage of these aircraft are the same as in civil aviation - they are hauling people.
Aircraft certified for military applications initially (ie not for personnel transportation) tend to be in the Military Forum (ie C-17, F-16, etc). There are some exceptions, but that is the trend that I have noticed.
