I saw a photo on ANET last week that had a caption that read something about the last operational deployment of the F14. Anyone know what Airwing will infact be the last operational airwing ?

Sad really, I enjoyed the sight of the F-14.

Those would be the last two squadrons. The last operational airwing was CVW-8.

VF-31 and VF-213 returned on March, hence priority screening for Tomcat shots to mark the occasion...A very sad day, delighted I was on the ship in December to see them for both the first and last time...

Very inaccurate information! The F-14 will be retired in September, I believe just following the airshow.

They are reffering to "operational" deployments. The last cruise is over.

Who said Feb? I've never heard of anything in Feb. VF-213 starts transitioning in April while VF-31 starts later in the year. The last operational F-14 flies out a week or two before the airshow here.

Put it this way, all the F-14 data used in the CAOC in theatre is now gone, never to return, so all you are going to see is stateside work, nothing more in any operational theatre overseas.

I was just going ot start a thread about this. We awoke this morning to hear on local news that hte F14 had its last mission yesterday? It was a highlighted affair here on Long Island, the F-14;s birthplace

Finally got this stupid website up:

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/aircraft/f-14.htm

Quote:

By early 2006 only 22 F-14 Tomcats remained in service, aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt. These last two F-14 squadrons returned from theis last deployment on 10 March 2006. VF-213 Blacklions transition to the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet in April 2006, and the VF-31 Tomcatters give up their Tomcats in September 2006.

Last combat mission was Feb 9th, last deployment was this month, and last and final flight will occur in September. Hope that clears everything up.  Wink
