I was reading through the latest "Airliners" magazine and I saw a question asking what the pitot tubes were. That reminds me of the times I've been out to sea on destroyers and Cruisers in my Helo Det and ship personnel would come up to me asking if the pitot tubes on the SH-60B were machine guns. Not able to pass it up we always went along with the question and said that they were. We also pointed out the "missile" on the side of the aircraft....of course it wasn't, it was just a MAD bird.

Pitot tubes take in ram air for the airspeed indicating system. These tubes are heated, so they don't ice over. That is why they are not painted.
