There is a pretty decent sized military presence at JFK today. Is Mr. Bush visiting the area or something? There is a C-5 sitting out by the runway for the last 30 min

He is in Camp David last time I heard...Perhaps he is coming here this week. Last few times he came to New York, he flew into a nearby AFB and choppered into the Downtown heliport...But it's entirely possible that he is coming.

I remember Clinton coming to JFK in 1998 or so...They had the military aircraft parked behind the TWA hangar and the Belt Parkway Westbound was entirely shut down for his motorcade.

Btw, is there only a C-5 or what else? And where is it parked exactly?

There is a C-5 parked out deep on txwy Alpha and two Chinook (I don't know if thats how you spell it) in that new de-icing building by the TWA hangar. Thats all that I can see.

A single C-5 and two 'sh*thooks' is a 'huge' military presence...??? Maybe it's just a NY ANG C-5 stopping by for a short visit or to pick up the Chinhooks. BTW- They are using the C-17 for the Presidential motorcade transport. The C-5 is way too big......

The C-17 can carry the helicopters? I thought only the C-5 could do that...

For what it's worth, the aircraft I saw in '98 was a C-141...I believe they also had a C5 on that visit as well though.

No idea, but I've seen them pass through my airport on the way elsewhere. I remember one time I was on the ramp and saw it approching and said "Hey, that's an H-61..!!, HEY, that's a GREEN H-61..!! HEY.. it's got a white top...HEY, that's Marine 1...!!! When it's flying on a non-Presidentail mission they remove the Presidential Seal from the doors. Notice the pictures below.

Now of course when it goes overseas it's shipped on a C-5.

On Saturday around 12 noon I saw two of the Marine One helicopters escorted by 3-4 Chinocks flying over the NJ side of the Hudson they went past the Intrepid up to Edwater NJ and then swung back around and came back South the same direction they came. They were flying at very low altitude, it almost looked as if they were taking the President on a sight seeing flight around Manhattan.

Had Bush been about on Saturday, there would have been a TFR put up. There wasn't one, so I have to assume he wasn't in the area.

I'll be on the FDR in the morning...I'll look to see if there is increased activity near the heliport.

FlyDeltaJets, any update on those military aircraft at JFK?

The President will be in Kings Point today to speak at the Merchant Marine Academy Commencement ceremony. That is probably why you are seeing an increased military presense at the airport.

The C-17 left, I didn't see when it did b/c I had two flights to do. I cannot say if the helicopters are gone as I didn't pass that way when I left the airport. Last night.

There was an article today about Mayor Bloomberg going to meet the President at JFK where he was stopping on his way to Kings Point.

What you saw yesterday was doubtless practice runs, route planning, perhaps some VIP movement.

Bottom line was: You Were Right!!

The 3 military aircraft passed by my house earlier on their way to Kings Point and just passed by again headed back to JFK about 15 minutes ago(1140 EDT) so I guess he is headed back to D.C. Nice to see them flying so low...damn they are noisy though! LOL!!!

It was two Chinhooks and one of these too:

And where Bush goes, a TFR goes as well. Thusly, my planned flight, which went nowhere near where he was except for HPN, got called off. The gratuitous cursing begins now.  Angry

They use a C-5 on the presidential trips, also.
