Taking inspiration from a similar topic, I would like to know your opinion about my country's airforce, onestly.
Well, I think it's not so bad, after all, (especially because from the next year the Typhoon will be in line). Not the level of the major 5/6 airforces, of course, but better the many others (I hope...)

Your thoughts are welcome.

Strengths;
Big Tornado force, with combat experience and a upgrade soon. Plus some dedicated ECR SEAD aircraft.
Good transport force.
Air to air refuelling, to be improved by KC-767's.
Precision munitions.
Good aircover for navy with Tornado F3's.

Weaknesses:
AMX. (But easy to fix - re-engine with unreheated EJ2000, and upgrade avionics).
F-104S.
Atlantiques need replacing.

There are a lot of improvements that could be done but I'd say that the Italian Air Force is one of the best in Europe.
the AMX Ghibli showed to be perfectly suited for operations in theater such as kosovo and Bosnia, that's to say a guerriglia kind of war. I think that it would be good in the current attacks in Afghanistan (after all it is in the same class as the A-10 and SU-25).

Yes, the air defense should have been upgraded much earlier but in a few years time we will have F-16s and Typhoons.
An upgraded Tornado force will still be a high asset.

Ciao

Stefano

Biggest weakness from a spotters point of view....
those really small MM..... numbers, do all you Italian spotters have really good eyesight?

Best thing...... the last few F-104S flying today. OK they are old and past it, but don't they look and sound great??

Good point...Your pilots will take time out to talk at airshows.

Regards
Dave

If I'm not wrong it's still a crime to take pictures inside italian airports (expecially military ones...).
Yes, the F104 (great planes indeed) are probably the main weakness of the italian airforce, but a couple of months ago I red on a aviation magazine that their pilots claim these old birds can still be dangerous even against younger fighters.
They are very fast, but I have some doubt...
