I have ask about USAF jet, but now I bringing it to the USN. An EA-6B Prowler wins hands down by today standers. But I looking for any USN jet that was lunched off a carrier, not just current ones. F-4 phantom, A-3 Skywarriers, A-5 or even an A-3. So what the loudest jet to ever land or take off an USN CV/CVN.

--If you're on deck, you're wearing cranials along with double-hearing protection, so the noise won't be as bad.
--If you're on the crow's nest, all jets on burner are absolutely noisy!! Plus because of the JBD's, the jets getting shot out of Cat's 1 & 2, are going to swamp you with their exhaust fumes.
--If your rack is in the zoomies berthing areas and you're trying to catch a wink, or you're eating at the "Dirty Shirt's" Wardroom, then the noise of the cats can be annoying as hell!

From my experince the A-6 and EA-6B. Even with ear plugs and heavy duty mickey mouse ears it would hurt if you were on the cats and they went to military.

A-6 & EA-6B's always go military on the cats. Burners are not an option!

Even though A-6 and EA-6B do not have afterburners, they still are louder than a F/A-18 due to the fact that they use turbo jet insteaded of turbo fan. In fact I herd from those who was on my ship when they carried F-14, that EA-6B are louder than a F-14B/D. I was think about older turbo jet powered plane like A-3 or F-4 when I started this post.

Not that I've heard it before, but one possibility that came to my mind was the North American RA5-C with those big and dirty GE J79-10s. I'd imagine they would rattle your fillings when launched in afterburner.
Just give me my Vario, my Ozone Mojo and a gorgeous day of soaring.

Well, I have never been aboard a CV during flight operations, but looking at USN aircraft, I would guess it has to be:
A/EA/ERA-3
A/RA-5
F/RF-4 (yes the USMC RF-4Bs were CV capable)
A/EA-6
Panther
F-8
A-7

The A-3 was non afterburning and it was not as loud as suggested here.
For chest hammering decibels, I would have to go with the J-79 engined A-5 and F-4. The F-14 was up there too.
For the most obnoxious loud, my vote is the F3H Demon ...It was just AWFUL.

Quoting LMP737 (Reply 12): The F-14 was but a whisper when compared to the EA-6B and A-6
That depends on your individual ear. The screaming shrilly banshee sound of the 6's did not bother me as much as the roar of the 14. And as I said above, when launching from CAT 1-2, the JBD's would just send that heat/smell right to the bridge wings and crows nest. UGH!!!

On the cats the high pitch whine from the J-52 is so bad it hurts your ears. I remember when some folks from Navy medical came buy and wired some of our plane captains for sound to check for decibel exposure. They were going to other bases as well doing the same thing. We asked them who is exposed to the highest levels. Their answer was the guys in the A-6/EA-6B community.

The EA-6B hands down!!!!! That mother would rattle your teeth. It didnt matter if you wore double protection. I will never forget getting stuck between cats 3 and 4 and had to stay there until the Prowler took off. It seemed to take forever, it was very scary. This is coming from a Tomcat shooter. Loudest by far.

Hands down, the Vigi (RA-5C) was the loudest. I have sat behind the JBD in an A7E while the Vigi went to stage 5 blower, then launched. Not only loud, but it shuck the Corsair like a dog tryin' to pass a peach seed. Most spectacular at night too! The Crusader (we had RF-8's for workups on one cruise) were quite loud also. The J-57's had a single stage blower and when they selected it, it lit with a LOUD bang.

F-4's...without a doubt. The loudest damn things I've ever heard.
