C-5 Galaxy Replacement

I know the C-5 will be in service to at least 2020, but I just wanted to see want other think, would be a good replace for it. The since the C-17 (which was built to replace the C-141) turn out to be a great plane, it got me to thinking about a C-5 replacement. My thought are that Boeing will build ether a giant flying wing or a giant cargo jet base on an enlarge C-17 design (like C-5 was base on a enlarge C-141 design) that use four jet engine that will have a BPR of 12 or 14. So what do you think will replace the C-5 Galaxy?

Uh, its hoped that 2020 will be the latest the C-5 reengining programme will be completed by, so think more along the lines of 2040 or later.

I think the next heavy lifter will be a superlifter in the form of a blimp.

The C-17 according to the news has come up a little short with the extra fuel tank.

Airbus has a good lead with what they have for heavyhaulers and I would not be surprised that something might come from that area with the way Metal prices have gone to the upper zone.

If the replacement would be built,,They could go the route the Orginal C5 was to be..almost like the "dream" Russia built. 6 engines that have to be unbelievable quite and a fueslage that can be configured with removable sections for differnet owners!!

There's no need for six engines when you have powerplants like the GE90-115B.

Lockheed said in Aviation Week they are looking at 2060 for the retirement of the C-5M's. They will all be converted by like 2015.

Oh it's going to take more than a streched C-17 to replace a C-5. You need a new giant design.

As far as I'm concerned, the C-17 option isn't an option. With Boeing shutting down the 17 line, they won't be keeping anything needed for the C-17 build(unless they store the tooling). I doubt they will store the tooling though, especially since the 17 isn't a Boeing designed aircraft.

10 to 20 years for funding and tooling and testing would put the new search around when they have all the current C5's upgraded - that is if they stay to the current schedule..

YES! The performance qualities of the C-17 with increased cargo volume would make the Globemaster probably the most capable medium-heavy lifter in the world (no discredit to the Herk - different cargo class though).

Perhaps, but then that depends on what the services define as their needs when that time comes and also on how much they're willing to spend to get what they want. Bearing in mind what's been said several times before in this forum, it's expensive to design a new airplane when modifying an existing design just might do the trick. How long might Boeing hold out for a possible production run of stretched C-17s? Hard to say. Is the Defense Department looking that far into the future? I rather doubt it. If the forecast retirement of the C-5M is to come in 2040 or later, that's a long time down the road. Then there's the question of whether the C-5 airframe can last that long.

Its already been proven that the aircraft has over 80% of its service life left, and that was based off of 9004s teardown inspection, which is an A-model. The Bs will be around until at least 2060. The As have more issues with them, but they can still be worked out.

As I said before, they aren't gonna stretch a C-17. It isn't a 141 where it was easier to do. You'd have to redesign the whole plane to stretch it.

One problem with stretching: It will probably result in a degradation of the assault capabilities--just like the 130H-30.
