Probably "Yankee Lady" from the Yankee Air Museum - she was in town for the Teteboro Wings & Wheels open house this weekend.
By strange coincidence, the EAA's "Aluminum Overcast" was at Republic (FRG) this weekend as well. Both were offering rides ($425 a pop, I believe). Based on Saturday's departures by "Yankee Lady", I'd bet that was the one you saw over NYC.
Yeah, she's a nice bird. Unlike much of the stuff at the Airpower Museum, she's not in flying condition, but they got her last year (IIRC) and it's nice to see out there when you drive by. It's a nice little museum and they put on quite a show for Memorial Day & Labor Day weekends, usually getting some heavy WW2 iron to pay a visit. They also hosted the last Long Island visit by the F-14 in June.
