For 116 missions, there have been 161 Space Shuttle launch attempts to date. A launch attempt is defined as a scheduled launch after the countdown begins (usually T-43 hours, or 3 days before scheduled liftoff.)

Of the 116 Shuttle launches, 36 were on time (31%)

Of the 124 launch delays, 43 were less than 24 hours (35%)
(79 out of 116 Shuttle launches took place the day it was scheduled, or 68%)

Of the 124 launch delays, 52 were due to weather (42%)

Of the 161 launch attempts, 81 were delayed more than a day (50%)

HA, see people, the C-5 has an awesome relability rate compared to the space shuttle! Go 57%!

Although alot of the launch delays were weather related. Considering how rare they fly the shuttle to the C-5, there is really isn't a comparison, but I figured I'd throw out a joke for a change.

STS-28 Launch delayed classified period < 24 hrs (computer error, 8/8/89

You must have bettter sources than William Harwood. He was told that it launched on time.  Smile

So, was it a weather delay, or did the astronauts try to bring liquids aboard? Big grin

I thought so too, but according to the official NASA Mission Reports, STS-47 was the first on-time launch since STS-61B, so there must have been a slight delay in STS-28. (Its hard to tell, since that was a classified mission.)

Here is the relevant section of the STS-28 Mission Summary...

"MISSION SUMMARY

The launch countdown was held at the T-9 minute built-in hold longer than planned when the network signal processor (NSP) had a frame synchronization error and a master memory unit (MMU) area 1 read problem occurred during the transition from OPS 9 to OPS 1. After a computer update to retrieve OPS 1 from area 2 of the MMU, a successful transition was made..."

Because STS-28 was a classified mission, with launch time not announced until the end of the T-9 min hold, we don't know the original launch time or how long it was delayed.
