I walked outside this moring @ about 5 AM . Must have just missed the actual launch from NM. What a incredible vapor trail visible in the atmophere!. It was still dark outside but the vapor trails were illuminated by the rising sun.

It looked to me like their was more than one vehicle launched , I assume a target ?

Also visble was a larger cloud that may have been the impact area or a self destruct event.

Just a follow up, AP story

By ASSOCIATED PRESS
September 13, 2006

WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. (AP) - The test of a high-altitude missile defense system was scrubbed early Tuesday after a target missile failed shortly after launch, military officials said.

A Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile was to be launched to intercept the Hera target missile in flight, said Pam Rogers, a spokeswoman for the Missile Defense Agency, which manages THAAD.

But an anomaly was detected in the Hera, and safety officers at White Sands destroyed the missile about 2 minutes after it was launched, she said.

Telemetry data will be analyzed to determine what caused the failure, Rogers said.

I remember driving through that area on the way to Angel Fire, NM several times during their missile tests. You could see many different contrails through the air everywhere you looked. Impressive to see, probably even more so to watch as it happens.

I was so lucky a couple years ago. I walked out on my back porch @ about 4AM just in time to see one. The horizon over the mountains illuminated like a distant lighting strike, but remained for about 20 seconds until I saw the contrail. When the contrail (vehicle) entered the outer atmosphere the contrail was illuminated into a greenish color with prism like effects coming off of it. It was breathtaking , I tried to describe it to my co workers but unless you witnessed it , it can not be grasped. The contrail from that particular launch remained in the sky well into mid morning.

I was also lucky enough to catch a launch from Vandenburg one evening. But it was nothing like the NM launch I saw.
