What's wrong with this picture?

Big version: Width: 200 Height: 135 File size: 9kb


The photo shows what is reported to be Lucky Lady II. However, Lucky Lady II was a B-50A. The airplane here sports a B-50D nose. As I understand it, Lucky Lady II suffered damage to the nose, to the extent that it had to be replaced. The replacement appears to have come from a B-50D but I can't tell you what the serial number of that airplane was. Does anyone know details regarding how Lucky Lady II was damaged and where the present nose section actually came from?

Just curious but how do you tell the difference between a B-50A and a B-50D by looking at the nose?

A quick look at a reference book says the main development of the 'D' model was the two large fuel tanks beneath the outer wings, various modifications to structure and armament, and the adoption of a standard system of in-flight refuelling.

An interesting aircraft, especially the later KB-50 variants, not too many were preserved sadly.

Well since I happen to live 20 mins from that museum (Planes of Fame in Chino, CA), I have seen that aircraft dozens of times. The picture also doesn't show you that there are no wings, tail, or horizontal stabilizer. So basically, the aircraft is not really in display condition (even though it is on display) and may have just received a new nose until it is restored. It is however the "Lucky Lady II" so no point in arguing over that. I seriously doubt a museum as large and respected as chino is going to lie about it.

The B-50A has the B-29 style nose with the bombardiers station having a segmented nose cap and a smaller flat panel. The B-50D has the larger flat panel and isn't segmented. Put another way, the B-50D nose cap presents a less obstructed view, as seen in the picture included at the beginning of this thread.

I accept that it is Lucky Lady II. No question there. But the nose appears to have come from another airplane. I uderstand the airplane crashed not long after the famous flight and the nose was seriously damaged; more accurately it was literally destroyed. So a new nose was installed. Just never have figured out what airplane it came from.

I wonder if it was just the D model glass replacing the framing. It may be a simple substitution. I was thinking of the whole nose section like "Frankenherk" had after it's accident in the Azores.

It seems that there are five B-50 bombers currently preserved in the USA; at Pima, Castle, Wright-Patterson, Chino and MacDill AFB. I remember visiting the U.S. Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson in 1987 and they had two B-50's on display outside, one of which was in a very attractive 'white top' weather recon colour scheme. The second one was a KB-50 variant with additional podded jet engines, she is the one now at MacDill in Florida. One web based source lists her as 49-00389, another as 48-114.

Nope, she's sitting outside. I thought it was a B-29 until I got a little closer and saw the jets under the wings. This was in November '04, but she was sitting in the corner a few doors down from the B-58 and the two B-52's.

Wait, here it is!  

She's actually a KB-50.
