I'd be interested in the weight of empty drop tanks for fighters. Does somebody have information on this subject ?

The type of the tank isn't important, just name examples you know.

Thanks in advance.

F-16 externals aren't too heavy, you can pick one up with 2 people easy. I'd estimate roughly 175lbs empty.

F-15 tanks on the other hand are a bit heavier, I'm thinking probably 230-260lbs empty, though they do hold a lot more JP-8.

A-10 tanks are beasts...they gotta come close to the 280lb mark.

Fill either the F-15 or the A-10 external tank up with JP-8 and our jammers (kind of a mini forklift) can't hold the tanks anymore and start to smoke all over the place.

Now I've worked on all 3 of the above mentioned tanks but the weights are just estimates since I've never actually had to bother with weighing or shipping them.

Alohaz!

I believe the A-10 external tanks are the same as those used on the F-111 and hold something like 600 gallons. F-15 tanks also hold 600. Don't know what the F-16 tanks hold. F-105 wing tanks held 450 gallons and could be man-handled by 4 people but the requirement for so many was as a result of the tank also having the pylon attached and it got hard for two folks to hold it up and keep it balanced.

You're right about the A-10 tanks, but they also made a second tank dedicated to the A-10. At DM we had both. I'm not sure how accurate this is but one of the techs in my old shop told me that the old F-111/A-10 tanks have problems with the QD's (quick disconnects) that's why the Air Force got a second type.

The F-16 externals come in 2 sizes, 300 and 370 gal.

A bit off topic though, but since A342's question seems to be answered, it might be OK: Do external tanks have speed limits, such as a certain Mach value which must not be exceeded?

Yes. If the speed exceeds the design criteria you could be in deep doo doo. Which is why sometimes tanks are jettisoned in combat situations.
