On Friday, two RAF VC-10's arrived for the Red Flag war games at Nellis. As rare as these "birds" are, LAS is fortunate to host them several times per year, thanks to these war games.
The main reason for this post was, while listening to ATC, a WN 737 had been following one of the VC-10's inbound. Upon arrival into LAS, he asked the control tower, "What the heck is that?", referring to the smoke they were inhaling for the past 5 minutes. The control tower promptly replied, "It is a Victor Charlie 10". The WN pilot replied with a simple response of, "Oh"... It is my opinion that all WN pilots should be given a spotters guide to aircraft transports before their next flight

They make a hell of a racket too. Used to get them on training flights when I lived at the end of the runway at LBA and I don't think I've ever heard any "airliner" louder than that! Well, perhaps a BAC 1-11 but it would be a close contest!

we were on short final to 25 left in '04, when a VC10 and 2 Jaguars were taking off of 25R ,they were so loud,so wonderfully ,joyously loud, that we could feel the noise in our cockpit, I love the VC10,till the 747s arrived in '70,BOAC VC10s were my favorite plane to spot at JFK when I was a kid !
the rumble of round engines is like music to me,likewise the thunder of thr JT8D
