Not to sound alarmist here but wasn't that the name of the space based defense system from the "Terminator" movies?

Yes it was, it had something to do with the machines killing humans. Anyway, there is a real Skynet satellite launched a few moments ago from South America.

Skynet is the British military communications satellite system. This is the fifth generation of Skynet satellites dating back to 1969. There are to be three Skynet 5-series (5A, 5B, and 5C) satellites launched.

Here you go.....
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/6434773.stm

A previous generation of Skynet's, (I cannot remember if it was the previous generation, or the one before that, were slated to be launched by the Space Shuttle, starting in 1986. Payload Specialists had been picked for these four launches, one from the British Armies Royal Signals Corps, one from the RAF, one from the Navy and one for the descendent manufacturer of the new ones, Marconi.
Then the Challenger accident happened, So Ariane 4's lanuched them. Prior to this, US launchers had been used for previous Skynet's, presumably the Shuttle was to be an extension of that arrangement, since the late 1960's.

They were to be Skynet 3's. Instead, Britain abandoned them and went on to Skynet 4, which they split into two phases.

One Skynet 4 went up on the first Commercial Titan (AKA Titan 34D) before Martin-Marietta got out of the commercial launch business.
