I've seen a couple of pictures of an RAF Alphajet lately - what's the story behind this and how long have the RAF had Alphajets?

In 1999, the Defence Evaluation and Research Establishment obtained 12 Alpha Jets, mainly from the Luftwaffe.

5 were used for spare parts.

They are currently operated by both the Empire Test Pilots School and Qinetiq.
