Can anyone tell me what the C160 was doing at SFO? It took off from 01R at 7:42AM today. R52 was written near the top of the tail. 61-MX was written behind the rear starboard door.

I heard a plane like this yesterday morning around the same time but couldn't see it anywhere (didn't have binoculars). It isn't often I get to hear props that sound like it at SFO.

Plane looked almost identical to this:

It very well could have been a C-160. I'm thinking it was probably German however. The GAF has some of them overhere. However that does not mean it couldn't have been a French Bird.

Germany's C160's do not carry such designations, so should indeed have been french.
GAF's markings are like "50+90" ...:

Yep, that code sounds like a French one.

Quick, tell those militia groups they have been invaded!

Seriously though, a good sighting, I guess you don't see one of them that often at SFO.

I do know that there is a joint USAF and French exercise taking place in Alaska right now. Maybe that has something to do with it?

I don't know, I was just speculating. But if it was going to Alaska, it would be a bit off the normal route!

On approach, the C160's noise is similar to that of a C130 (minus the latest models).
Also on departure, noise levels are comparable, with the 2 props on the C160 producing a different sound than the 4 props on the C130.

BTW, I saw a German C160 yesterday (19-APR) parked at IAD. Was too distant to get reg' but the unit's logo could have been the one from LTG 62 based at GAF Wunstorf (my homebase):

Does the French base any military aircraft in French Polynesia? I'm asking because this same aircraft, 61-MX, was at HNL on 03 Apr. I did get to look at it up close and get pictures, and yes, it was a French C-160.

A C160 should be pretty heavily payload restricted for a sector like SFO-HNL.
With 16,000 kg of payload its range is only 1170 mi, opposed to SFO-HNL @ 2399 mi.

If the French AF would have to transport goods over long distances, the A310 would be a better option (unless the destination cannot serve an A310, of course).

According to wikipedia the Armée de l'Air has a base at Nouméa, but I have found no information yet about a/c stationed.

A few helicopters and Airtech CN.235s according to the order of battle at scramble.nl/fr
