J-52 Vs F-100 Witch Is Noisier

I been told turbojets are a lot louder than turbofans. But I have to say I can handle the noise from a J-52 turbojet at idle better than a F-100 turbofans at idle. At sea on the fight deck, I have stood 8 to 10 feet from an EA-6B with both it's J-52 running, and even when I took out out one of my hearing protection to see how loud the A/C are ( by the way not a good ideal), I have to say, I can handle being close to a EA-6B a lot better than, being across the field from a F-15 or F-16. Ear spiting is the best way to describe a taxing F-15 or F-16 powered by F-100. So is it me, or is the F-100 noisier than the J-52?

PS: For ears sake, may be it a good thing the turbojet version of the F-100 the PW1120 was not order. Oh and by the way I like loud engines, so for me to say an engine to loud, that give you a description of how loud a F-100 is at idle or taxi.

Having been around both, and having worked on the F-100 for quite some time, I think the F100 is quiet but still loud, but the J-52 is just plain noisy, hands down. Just my opinion though, it's kind of apples-to-oranges, seeing the generational gap and also the application differences between the two.

Now put an F100 into burner, you've got a noise maker that could cause the enemy to surrender merely from sound torture.

Both are pretty loud in my books. But the loudest? I say the J-52. Since the F100 is similar to the F110 that I previously worked on for 4 years until her retirement and being a troubleshooter in test cell while I was assigned to a carrier in 2004, we ran the J-52 and being literally touching the engine at idle, flight idle, ground idle, min. and max burner. (While the J-52 doesn't have burners, still, the turbine casing gets red hot after running for minutes at 100% power) Even wearing double hearing protection works, but still is really loud. Perhaps the military should invest in some BOSE noise-cancelling headphones for us mechs.  Silly

There was a reference in another thread (can't remember where) to some articles where they talked about some British aviators providing support in Iraq and Afghanistan by simply overflying crowds at high speed and low altitude.

The sound pressures alone were enough to disperse the crowds.

Reminds me of a great quote I read from a F-14 flier, after "Final Countdown" came out ... he was asked how he would have handled a confrontation with a Japanese Zero in his F-14 ... ie: would he shoot a missile, use the guns, etc ...

His answer? None of the above ... he'd simply overflown the Zero @ high mach and watched the wings snap off ...  Smile
