Why So Few F-15C Squadrons

This post is in response to an archived thread listed below. I have only joined this site in the last few days, so I was not able to post to that thread while it was active.

I realize this may not answer the original question, but it's more in response to some of the replies. Several expressed concerns that current F-15C levels has resulted in an inability to cover current requirements. However, a more important point has been overlooked--you can buy as many F-15C's as you want, but you gotta have a guy(or gal) in the seat to make it happen! Pilot manning is the USAF's real problem. And it's a vicious circle that extra $$ won't necessarily fix. Consider that, from the day he/she enters active duty, it takes about 24-30 months to train a fully operational fighter pilot(12 months initial pilot training + 2 months basic fighter fundamentals + 6-8 months for upgrade in specific fighter). Throw in a month of leave every year, some "fudge" time between training courses and other requirements and you start to see how long it takes to rebuild a severely undermanned flying community!

Also, Lt AWacs...I noticed you mentioned the F-22 would be flown at Tyndall. I might be wrong, but I thought the USAF decided initial training and operational squadrons would be at Langley AFB?

well before I left Tyndall for Tinker, Tyndall had been picked as the first IQT Training base for the F-22 (the 1st and 2nd FS will transition first to the F-22 while the 95th FS 'Go Boneheads  Smile ' stays on for F-15C B coursers)
Langley will be the first operational base for the F-22 as far as I've read in the Air Force times. Tyndall was already building their new tower and hangers plus redone runways, all for the F-22 coming to Town (this was started in 2000). Ciao.

According to the AF Link website news (17 Jan 02), intial F-22 bed-down for both training and operational flying will be at Langley.

I can't speak for the hangars, but I know the tower and runway projects at Tyndall were not specifically funded for the F-22. AETC has constructed new towers at no fewer than four of their installations in the last three years(Tyndall, Randolph, Altus and Little Rock). Existing towers were just too old and needed to be updated. None of that work was based on potential airframes. As for the runway repair, Tyndall has long needed that work to be done regardless of what aircraft is utilizing the field.

By the way, not trying to turn this into a big debate. I've read a lot of your posts, and I think you have a lot of good ones. I think this F-22 bed-down story has just changed so much in the last few months and that is probably the root of much speculation.

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for answering my question! Currently, I am trying to join the Air Force to hopefully become a pilot. What a process, no wonder they have a pilot shortage. Jump through ten hoops then stand on your head. Make monkey sounds and maybe just maybe we will "qualify" you.

I hope my answer didn't mislead you. I wasn't trying to infer that the USAF pilot training process was a series of "hoops". Quite the contrary. Training for pilots is probably one of the most demanding training programs in the military. Each of those "hoops" has a specific purpose. They are all dependant on which airframe you are assigned. All quite different in nature and difficulty.

Now, if you indeed want to become a pilot in the USAF, I strongly encourage you to not to enter training with the "monkey" perspective you mentioned. Air Force operations are serious business. Mistakes=funerals...and all that training is designed to minimize those mistakes.

The problem with the constuction at Tyndall was it was Cancelled (and some delayed) in 1999 and when Tyndall got the first F-22 IQT mission the money for the base updates 'magically' appeared. Folks were worried the base was going to get the AX so getting the F-22 IQT was a big coup as Eglin, Luke, Langley and others wanted the first unit.
I just called some friends at Tyndall and as far as they know the base is still planning on getting the FTU at the 325FW. With Langley getting the first Op units after Edwards testing. Of course as you said these things are fluid as are most AF decisions. I'll see what a hear in the future and try and post it.

Now if I can only get Tinker to close  Smile (which could happen  Smile Ciao

Acorrding to Hamfist then the RNZAF won't get it's air combat force, I know that he did not say that.
I was refering to his comments on the price of training pilots, the cost of which would not be cheap and that does not matter what country you live in.

Oh, quite the contrary, I am extremely serious about the process, it just is very long and tedious. I look forward to the flight training, but all this paper work etc right now is sometimes disheartening.

Well as Donald Douglas was rumored to say:

"When the weight of the paper equals the weight of the airplane, only then you can go flying."

I thought about that route and was serious for quite some time, up until I got to college and discovered aerobatics, well it just flew out the window, aerobatics is just as fun and generally has less paperwork, though it is more expensive for the pilot.
