My question is what aircraft do you think these will be for - they only ordered 37 of them?  Smile

Boeing wins $77M Air Force contract

Feb. 25, 2008 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) --

WASHINGTON (AP) - Boeing (NYSE:BA) Co. has won a $77 million Air Force contract boost to install 37 anti-missile systems, the Defense Department said late Friday.

Boeing will install 37 'Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasure' systems, which can detect infrared-seeking missiles and then defeat them using high-intensity laser beams.

On topic, this is pretty cool stuff. I'd heard about it but thought it was stil years off. Any idea of what type the 37 aircraft will be?

The irony is Boeing getting this immediately after Raytheon establishes themselves as the only US contractor with a device that has proven itself in anything other than a training exercise.

I'm interested to see how this system will develop. Specially in the area of weight. If they can get it smaller and lighter, it can be of great use to military helicopters.

The ALQ-144 is growing long in the tooth.

So who wants to propose that this is the consolation prize in the tanker fight?
