I keep hearing that Boeing is funding "long lead items" for the C-17 but I have never seen heard what they are and I am a tad bit curious. Anyone out there have info on what they are?

I can't say specifically in the C-17s case but...

But generally long lead items are things like...

- Unmachined landing gear strut castings...
- Wing spars
- Floor beams

Recalling back to the start of the C-17 production program I want to say that the first metal cut was a floor beam...

To this, I would like to add:

- Engines
- Avionics

Both are extremely complicated and take significant time to produce to the point where they can be installed in/on the aircraft.

As well as:

Generators
Pumps
Some Machined titanimum parts
Some electrical parts.

But these are generally the same types of parts any OEM need to place orders for that take a long time to manufature.
