Rockwell Collins shows off Athena's Damage Tolerance and Autonomous Landing Solution on a DARPA sponsored scaled F/A-18 model. The plane looses 60% of the right part of the wing but manages to fly and land autonomously using INS and GPS. Rockwell Collins says the system will be able to assist pilots in emergency situations.

The system looks awsome and hopefully it will save pilot lives in the future.

I'll be impressed when it also compensates for loss of hydros, fire, fuel leaks and metal tearing. Combat damage isn't exactly a panel breaking lose at a pre-determined point.
