GOVERNMENT CAMP, Oregon (CNN) -- A military helicopter crashed while attempting to rescue climbers who fell into a crevasse on Mount Hood -- a rescue operation that one official said went "from bad to worse."
Nine climbers making their way to Mount Hood's 11,237-foot (3,408-meter) summit as part of a larger group fell into the crevasse Thursday morning. Three were killed, and another three were critically injured.
Rescue helicopters evacuated two of the injured hikers early on. But as the military rescue chopper was attempting to reach the rest, it crashed and tumbled down the mountain, critically injuring at least one of the five crew members aboard, authorities said.
All those injured on the mountain were pulled to safety, officials said.
The bodies of the dead hikers also were being retrieved, with that process expected to be completed on Friday.

It was technically a Pave Hawk not a blackhawk.
I don't remember if it was an Air Force Reserve one or Oregon National Guard. 3 helo's from both services had been dispatched to rescue a climbing party on MT. Hood. There had allready been 3 fatalities in the climbing party when they fell. Two members had allready been airlifted down off when this helo crashed when lifting another person.
OBAMA-WORST PRESIDENT EVER....Even SKOORB would be better.

That chopper got smacked by two worst case scenarios...
1. By the looks of it a massive downdraft of cold air, perhaps even kicked up by its' own rotors being so close to the mountain.
2. The thin air at that altitude prevented the rotors from creating the kind of lift to fight the downdraft.
I've never flown a helicopter, but I flew a Sikorsky S-76 full motion sim. Hovering and slow speeds near the ground are I think two of the toughest conditions of flight there are.
I hope the crew will be all right. I have to say one thing....once the Pave Hawk became a paperweight, some good engineering kicked in. I dont think my car would be that intact after rolling a half dozen times down a mountain!

Good call on the durability of the Pave Hawk. Especially when you read through the NTSB database and see all the cases of the tail boom separating from the rest of the craft. Watching it roll, I was expecting it to twist off, or at least see the vertical stabilizer/tail rotor mount to get crushed. Evidently the one critical injury from the crew was when he was ejected and then had the craft roll back over him. Lucky for him it was on snow, or else it could have been much worse.
And I've stopped counting, so this one is not going on my losses list.
It was this type .Maybe it just picked up the ELT because I am write under where all aircraft approaching to PDX. Very interesting we see them on the news do this all the time. I think he got into some turbulence.
