Looking for information on a truly ugly PURPLE & BLACK PANAVIA TORNADO.

I lecture on aviation history and carry several ACCURATE (I hope) models along to illustrate my lectures. Recently I added ones that were crude enough for the youngsters who refuse to consider "DON'T TOUCH !!" In a package of these was a PANAVIA TORNADO in really ugly Purple and Black -- Purple aft, black forward, wings scalloped between them with a thin gold stripe between the purple and the black. I could not believe that any self-respecting pilot would fly such a monstorsity and resolved to spray paint it. A colleague suggested I search for such a paint job just in case it was a "one off" special for some celebration. It had a German flag on each engine inlet.

I've covered most of the German Tornados on Airliners.net and haven't found it yet.

Anyone know whether or not this one is "for real" ??? Any information appreciated.

Are these models you use manufactured as accurate representations of real aircraft? What you described sounds a little too much like something that someone imagined and went ahead and built in model form.

I've seen photos of German and Italian fighters in some truly gaudy markings but haven't seen anything like what you described. I hope you find the answer to this one 'cause now my curiosity is sparked!  Smile

As a side note, what era of aviation history do you specialize in?

Most likely. I googled for Tornado+Bemalung and similar (considering that if pics exist, than on a German site), visited the homepages of some AF bases well-known for frequently changed "special paintings" ( http://www.flyingmonsters.de/ http://www.321tigers.org/ ) but couldn't find anything that comes close to a purple and black Tornado.
And whenever they added a golden or yellow line, it was black, red & gold - the colors of our flag.

So, no I don't think it's "for real".
