Last Saturday (11/1/08) I was talking photos at ILG when I noticed three heavy contrails in close proximity. Through my telephoto, I could make out three aircraft that appeared to be C-5s flying in close trail at what I'd guess to be FL 30.
I've never seen anything to suggest that C-5s fly in formation. I actually got the impression that it's pretty unusual anymore for military transports or even bombers to fly close proximity to one another.

It can be done, though it is not usual. But, keep in mind that every air refueling flight is also formation flying. This could have been two KC-135Rs and a C-5. They would be around FL-250.
