The highly quotable mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin, has done it again. Check out this beauty, talking about the upcoming New Orleans mayoral election:http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/3701694.html

Excerpt:
"This process that's before us is one that I'm getting more uncomfortable with every day. This is not about Ray Nagin," he told the group. "There is potential for major changes in the political structure."

Nagin noted that 23 candidates entered the mayoral fray before the registration deadline last week.

"Very few of them look like us," he told the almost totally black crowd of about 200 persons who attended the meeting at the NAACP Family & Technology Center on Fannin."

This idiot's just begging to lose the election.

Obviously a referance to the third or fourth arm some NO residents have sprouted due to the toxic sludge after the flooding.  sarcastic

Saddly enough... I think there is going to be another term of Nagin.

I'm thinking he'll likely make the 2-person runoff election, then get blown out (by either Forman or Landrieu).

Just how blatantly racist can get man get? First - the "Chocolate City" bullshit and now this.

What really fries my ass is all of the people of color that seem to support him - but would absolutely jump up and down, sceram and yell, call Jesse and his other attention whore buddy, if a "white" person made a similar remark. It'd be all over the damn news so fast it'd make one's head spin.

I think the people in New Orleans - that vote for this racist, non-performer - deserve what they get. . . . and it will be my LAST visit to NOLA . . . and I like the place . . .

Can you imagine the uproar if a similar remark had been made by the white Mayor of say - Biloxi, Mississippi - in regards to city?!

Inexcusable. Unconscionable.

Hopefully he loses and thinks about what he says. Let us rememeber that when common sense and brains were passed out Ray Nagin was absent. He has proved that he is not only incompetent as to running a city but pretty much ignorant. NO has a tough road ahead and re-electing some idiot that blames everything on other people and says things so stupid that even Howard Dean would be suprised is not a good first step.

There is nothing wrong with asbestos, as long as you take proper precautions when working with it.

My dad worked with and around asbestos for the better part of 40 years - in the boiler house of a large oil refinery. He's going to be 80 years old this May, and is healthy as a horse.

rotfl  and you think I take anything YOU say seriously? You, Mr."All the Ski Rersorts At Lake Tahoe are On the California Side" - wrong, of course. You, Mr. "I have a JD and LLM, and I'm in the PhD program," only to find out you are still in law school and haven't yet earned the JD and masters degree, so you can't be in a PhD program?

Just so we can cut to the chase, I agree with Professor Lester Brickman from Cardozo Law School, who says "Asbestos litigation today is, for the most part, a massively fraudulent enterprise that can rightfully take its place among the pantheon of such great American swindles as the Yazoo land frauds, Credit Mobilier and Teapot Dome."

The asbestos bar is as sleazy a group of lawyers as you will find in American law. If it isn't Baron & Budd from Dallas coaching clients how to provide testimony against asbestos defendants, it's Peter Angelos, whose lucrative relationships with unions result in the steering of potential asbestos plaintiffs to his law firm in exchange for questionable financial relationships with union executives. (That, and the bast*&d kept baseball out of DC for years. For that alone, he deserves a special place down below.)

As Professor Brickman notes:

"Approximately 90% of asbestos claims today largely consists of former industrial and construction workers and others:

(1) recruited by an extensive network of entrepreneurial companies which are employed by lawyers to "screen" hundreds of thousands of potential litigants each year at local union halls, hotel and motel rooms, shopping center parking lots, and other locations throughout the country to assemble the "inventory" that fuels the litigation;

(2) asserting claims of injury though they have no medically cognizable asbestos --related injury and cannot demonstrate any statistically significant increased likelihood of contracting an asbestos-related disease in the future;

(3) these claims are being asserted in a civil justice system that has been drastically altered to accommodate the interests of these litigants and their lawyers by dispensing with many evidentiary requirements and proof of proximate cause, giving rise to what I have termed "special asbestos law;"

I agree. And those plaintiffs who weren't sufficiently warned or protected ought to be compensated. But for those who knew the risks and ignored the safety precautions that were available, tough luck.

And they're all part of the class, getting pennies on the dollar from the settlement while the trial lawyers get the rest. Either that or the man dying of asbestos gets the same portion of the settlement as the man who once-maybe-kinda-was-in-a-room-that-may-have-had-asbestos-possibly...and again, the lawyers make out like Ken Lay before the sh!t hit the fan.

If he was smart he had the potential to look like the hero in this as Guiliani did post 9-11. He could have brought his city together. Did I say I think he was unqualified? Did I had a problem with him calling himself a Democrat? Did I even say I think he was wrong in supporting Bobby Jindal? No. I agree with the policies he put in place pre-Katrina, New Orleans made major strides because of them. I think Kathleen Blanco got elected because she played on the racism of Northern Louisiana to get people to vote against Bobby Jindal, who would have made an excellent governor of this state. In fact, I will vote for him if he runs against her. Ray Nagin is not an Uncle Tom at all, he took on the label he needed to in order to get elected in New Orleans and it worked.

You know how there is a minimum age to be a president or a mamber of parliamanet. There should be a minimum IQ to be elgiible to be mayor/governer/president. Then this kind of shit could be avoided.

Agreed wholeheartedly that Jindal would have made a better governor...I certainly voted for him. I think the Democratic stronghold that is (or nowadays, was) Orleans Parish was the primary reason Blanco made it in.

Quoting NIKV69 (Reply 31):
Let us not forget that the Governor was just as much to blame. I remember a news conference they did two days before Katrina hit. They both had the look on thier faces (I have no idea what to do look)

That's called the "deer in the headlights look". And Blanco definitely had it. Nagin's pre-Katrina look to me was more of the unprepared rat showing two middle fingers to the hawk swooping in on him .....yet the hawk still devoured him.

Nagin is just another figure in a long history of crooked politics in Louisiana.

Lets all read about Huey Long!!

He is pandering for votes obviously. He knows that he lost the white vote, so he is trying to get the black vote now at all costs, regardless of the consequences.

It's a shame, really. He did a lot to change the city pre-Katrina...but now, he's just desperate. Pretty pathetic actually.

Big difference though. Nagin had a chance to get out of the way, he had more than enough warning that hurricane was coming. He still dropped the ball, but you can always blame Bush. Everything is his fault.  sarcastic

Maybe Nagin can be a spokes person for Hershey chocolate if his Mayoral run does not work out.

Again, you completely ignored what I wrote. Nagin is a classic Republican (not the blend of Neo-Con and Religious nutcase that runs the party now), a very conservative guy fiscally and one who knew how to deal with money. Countless city projects got done under his leadership, ones that made financial sense AND helped people. He is much like Richard Riordan, a guy I would vote for over and over again over Grey Davis, who did much to help the City of Los Angeles.

Actually, the main reason Blanco won was not Orleans Parish at all. Orleans Parish was actually pretty split, with a lot of Black voters torn between classic party ties and Jindal's very progressive policies. The main reason she won is because she was able to carry both Cajun Country (where she is from) and Northern Louisiana, where she campaigned on the fact that her opponent looked different in nearly as dirty a way as George Bush's people did against John McCain

The levees are not a city responsibility. They are a Federal and State responsibility.

Ummmm. No, I quoted exactly what you wrote. The implication of "Uncle Tom" is there for everyone to see.

You liberals never learn. If you put it in writing, it's really hard to then run away from the statement.
