Burt Bacharach will be here in concert Thursday night. I’ve never seen him in concert yet I’ve always was a huge fan of his music. He is really getting up there in age. He is 77 and still going strong. I am sure him and his orchestra will put on a great show.
When artist get this old, you have to see them when you can. Most from his generation is long gone.

LEGENDARY composer Burt Bacharach remembers sitting in a plane leaving New York when a woman next to him mustered enough nerve to talk to him.
She said, "Mind if I tell you something? I can't make love unless I've got your music on."

It worked then. And 37 years after "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head," it works today. Bacharach, 77, is thrilled his bevy of hit tunes (48 in the Top 10 and nine at No. 1) still promotes the passion in people.

I had a lady over last year and I had Burt Bacharach playing. We were supposed to go out (which would have meant me spending money and listening to her talk) but instead we stayed in and made love all night with a Burt Bacharach 8track tape playing.  Cool

His score in Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid was truly a classic. Not to mention some of his other masterpieces: Alfie, Walk on By, and I Say a Little Prayer just to name a few. Damn, I wish he was appearing down here in southern CA.

One of my first jobs (1974) was in place that had "piped" music. One of the 8-track tapes was Burt Bacharach, but it had been played so often that the tape was stretched to breaking point. The resulting sound was like the band had been on the p**s for a month. It kind of put me off his music for a while. Having said that, at least that tape was instrumental, unlike the Sinatra "8-tracks", which were in a similar poor condition! Sad

I believe my father had a Burt Bacharach 8-track back in the early-70s. I forget the album title though, but I do believe it had a version of One Less Bell To Answer on it.

The first song on Track 1 was an instrumental song that a Boston-based UHF television station (Channel 56, then-WKBG/now-WLVI) would use as an intro. to its weeknight movies. If John/Logan22L were still here, he probably would remember the tune as well.

When I'm up in Massachusetts this Easter, I'll have to look around in my mother's basement to see if that 8-track is still around; I don't think that one's been played since 1975-76. The 8-tracks did not go with my father when he moved out nearly 14 years ago.

Quite true. To tell you the truth, I didn't think that he was still touring. Do you know if he has any East Coast appearances scheduled?

I wish all his leading ladys was there to sing with BB like Dusty Springfield (R.I.P.) and Cilla Black among others.

How much are tickets? He's a great songwriter and I'm not sure if an evening of sitting in my hotel room in Pleasanton would top seeing some good music.

Super: I saw the old rascal (for free) at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga last year (I think) and it was um interesting.

First, it's a little known fact that he wrote every hit song from 1962-1977. Or damned near. In fact that's the punch line on one of his little stories (he tells a LOT of stories, mostly because he really can't sing. The backup and extra singers were good though.) He slaved away at menial jobs in Hollywood (or was in New York) for all of 6 months before...writing every hit song for the next decade-plus. He meant the tale to inspire. It made me laugh.

Whatever, the Winery's an amazing venue and he was every inche the pro, so it was fine. Margaritas helped (me.) Him too I bet, now that I reflect.

Correction!
The concert is at the Palace of Fine Arts which is not close to BART. You'd be better off driving in. There is public transportation (bus line from BART).

Maury:
Sounds like I missed out on a great show. Was he with his orchestra?
You are correct about him not being a good vocalist.
His best singing voice is on the song 'Hasbourogh Heights'.

PHLBOS:
Sounds like it was this 8track you had.

Do you remember this album?
It was a promotional LP for Chevrolet 1970 model year.
It has Burt Bacharach, Dionne Warwick and Glen Campbell.
On the back cover, it had the Caprice Coupe, Monte Carlo and Chevelle SS.

April 1 at New Brunswick, NJ might be doable (it's only about 1 hour 15 minute drive from where I am); I'll keep that in mind. That all depends on how busy I'll be following my upcoming cruise this March 23-27 (that's why I didn't reply about going to the LAS meet).

If I can find a place to get my interior roof liner repaired/replaced on my '76 LTD (how you got B in there, I will never know; it's not like the B key is next to the D key) in time maybe I will take it up there.

Thanks for the info.

Remember when San Jose's KNTV used that song as their news theme, in a cheesy "news theme" version? Back when they had an ABC affiliation...in case you couldn't get KGO or wanted to see what was the haps in SJ. Anyway. Enjoy the show.

Nothing wrong that I did. Just a quick e911 and small contact center project to implement. Believe me, Pleasanton is "pleasant" compared to some of the hell holes I have been to in my career. El Dorado, Arkansas comes to mind quickly.

Well I work for the consulting arm of AT&T so within a stone's throw of my hotel is an AT&T office park and an SBC central office facility. Before we were bought by SBC back in 2004 our HQ was up in Concord.

I won't be able to make it. My change control window for tomorrow night was approved so I have to get some work done after hours and free up my Friday evening for being a slacker before flying home Saturday morning.

Hayward is just swell! We have nice trailer parks, rundown homes and apartments, junkyards and plenty of space to park semi-trailers on the street. If you need help around the house there's lots of people standing around on Tennyson Rd. looking for work  Wink

BTW, I live closer to Union City than central Hayward...if that's any better. It's quite a change from the City though.

Had the pleasure of seeing Burt in concert here in Dublin about four years ago Superfly, and we really enjoyed it, but I have to say, his voice isn't really the best anymore: he never had a great range, and at 77 you can hardly expect him to belt out his songs.

Great concert though, and his songs are pure CLASS. We preferred when he stuck to the piano and had other singers perform.

The Burt Bacharach concert was AMAZING!  Cool

I am not sure if I can find the words to accuratley describe how fantastic the show was.
Burt Bacharach still has it even at the age of 77. His band (mostly 30-somethings) faithfully played his tunes note for note. Amazing considering these songs were hits before his band was even born.
The show lasted 2 & a half hours with no intermission and the audience was captivated. I was the youngest person in the crowd (32) of about 4000 people over 55.
Lots of Buicks and Mercurys parked outside.  Wink
PHLBOS will understand what I mean by that.

Burt Bacharach is a very funny guy too. I may go out and buy his new CD. He played four songs from his new release and they sound really good.

PHLBOS, the show April 1 New Brunswick, NJ (State Theater) may be a special show. He played the song 'April Fools' which is on his 'One Less Bell To Answer' album (pictured above) so who knows.
At tonights show, he played four extra songs that wasn't played on on dates of this tour. It's been raining here in San Francisco so he did a vocal and instrumental verson of 'Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head'.  Smile

Worth noting, the place where I saw him perform (Palace Of Fine Arts) is featured in a lot of Ford/Mercury/Lincoln brochures in the 1970s and early 1980s.
