after reading the "snow, glorious snow" thread and seeing some people aren't too happy witht he snow it got me thinking, whats your favourite beach in the world that you've been to?

I just loved Hanauma bay on the island of Oahu, Hawaii when I was there a few years back, great sand, warm water and a beautiful reef.

There aren't many great beaches in the UK, but I guess there is one that has particular sentimental value to me. Last summer my friends and I road tripped it down to the Isle of Purbeck to a beach in Studland bay. The day was perfect, I don't think we've ever had nicer weather for a road trip and everything went smoothly. I have a couple of pictures here, look how clear the sky is (for England!).

http://img128.imageshack.us/img128/3667/studland23eu.jpg

As for the rest of the world I don't know. I've been to a lot of nice beaches (The Algarve, Greek Islands, much of Australias east coast spring to mind) but I guess I have a preference for the beach at Port Douglas. I didn't spend much time there but it seemed like a beautiful place, when the weather wasn't so volatile at least. I remember it for the green parrots that played about in the palm tree's that lined the beach, and also the golden sand and warm (if shark/jellyfish infested) waters.

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/2510/portdouglas5qm.jpg

Guess that's about it.

Among others. For those in the U.S., there is a new Travel Channel special called Off The Beaten Path tonight at 8 p.m. E.T. which will have a segment on the above place (Fernando de Noronha Archipelago). There is also a new commercial on TV that features the place, can't remember what it is for though...

I haven't been to any good beaches internationally so here it goes:

Maganari in Ios, probably the clearest waters I have ever seen with a view of Santorini island on the horizon

Red beach in Santorini (colour caused from the volcanic nature of the sand and rocks)
http://www.inflatablepartysheep.com/images/greece%20santorini%20red%20beach.jpg

Kolympithres beach in Paros

Its hard to choose between the three of them, all are equally good. One of the beaches that is a must IMO but I haven't visited yet is Navagio (Shipwreck) beach in Zakynthos.

I have been there some years ago, the beach sucks because there are mostly stones and not only sand. Furthermore was the water way too cold compared to the beach at our hotel.

I can only comment on beaches in SoCal, Hawaii, and Florida, but my favorites are Destin and Melbourne Beach, FL. Clearwater Beach is also really nice, as is the beach on Hanalei Bay on Kaua'i. It's volcanic beach and can get really hot really quickly, but it is absolutely breathtaking.

I've been in many places around the world and I like tropical beaches but...
to me (that is very personal) the Mediterranean has a different feel.
This is the beach I like most (but there are more I love).
It is in the small island of Caprera, in the north of Sardinia, toward Corsica.
It is very small and difficult to reach, but the contrast between the light blu waters and the pink rocks is stunning, especially in the late afternoon sun

White Bay, Jost van Dyke, BVI

Most fun is to sail within a quarter of a mile of the shore, maybe a bit more, drop anchor and swim ashore

Agreed. Justt got back from my 2nd sailing spring break to the BVI's. I also love Loblolly Bay and Cow Wreck Bay on Anegada, and Brewers Bay too! I love sailing and I love the BVI's. Can't beat em!
