Hi Folks,
Not looking for sympathy by any means, I am happy to be going, well bitter sweet, I manage the youth center in my little town in the AK bush. After 6 years I have given up my job and decided to go after some other goals I have like finishing flight school.
It is a bit bittersweet because I have come to have such a great relationship and interactions with tons of kids and seen them grow. But the administrative side of the job became more than I cared for so just put in my 30 days resignation and hopefully the transition for me into a new job will be smooth but also whoever takes over my position. Will be interesting. I wish I could see the look on my supervisors face when he opens the email containing my letter. I hope it is one of shock and not elation! HAHA

Why?

Are you staying in the same town or are you moving away. I presume that if you stay around the same town (forgot the name) the kids might still hang around with you or ask you for advice.

Anyway, good luck on your future endeavors.

I have to write my letter of resignation, too. I have been working at my job for nearly ten years but I'm going back to college for R.N. nursing. I can't keep the schedule I have now and attend classes at the same time. It's going to be very difficult to leave the students I've seen grow into wonderful adults and artists, and just as hard to leave some of my colleagues, but I have no choice. I'm in a dead end job and I've lost money over the course of my employment here - money I didn't have in the first place (DEBT.)

In short as it is a long story, expectations of paper work and that sort grew exponentially over the last year, it used to be 15% of my daily schedule, it became half of it. Plus keep in mind I live in the US, working for a non-profit organization, our fear of being sued and the entire cover your ass at all costs mentality despite what is right for everyone involved alienated me, this wouldnt be a big deal, but I saw my pay only increase $3 an hour over 6 years with much more work required. My job is administered out of ANC, the difference in ANC to bush AK is unimaginable, they didnt, dont understand fully how things work in rural AK. You can visit often, but it isnt nearly the same as living somewhere full time where the gap is huge. Except for statelitte tv and internet, and some fashion, places in rural AK are stuck in the 70s compared to the rest of the US.

I will be staying here, I have no desire to move into ANC or FAI, all of my friends are here and my family is in the cities, I will surely see the kids I deal with around town and that is a consolation to the whole thing is that I will still have contact with them.

Thanks for the reply, exactly how I feel in many regards. I could keep doing this for another 10 years, but I am not moving up the ladder any without moving out of town. Ill take less stress and more money any day. The one thing I will miss is the schedule, I work 12n-8p M-Th 2-10pmFriday

Man, tell me about that paperwork! Working in construction, I've seen more than my share of fees, paperwork, and BS to keep my head spinning, and it keeps getting worse.

At least you do get to keep seeing the kids, and I certainly hope that you can keep being a good influence on them.

Me too! I sent my letter off to First Choice Holidays yesterday. No longer shall I be a resort representative, getting grief 24/7 because people's maids haven't called to their apartments, because their flight was delayed or because the exchange rate of the euro isn't as good as last year. OOooooh those were the days!
