Hi all,

My dentist just called, the results are in, I need a root canal, or extraction.

The tooth isn't even painful at all, but that's beside the point.

From people who have had one before, prepare me.. how painful is it?

Thanks,
Billy  Smile

Which tooth?

I've had one. It's not that bad. The "painful root canal" is mostly a myth. the part that's most uncomfortable is the original anesthetic injection.

I've had many!

It can be painful for a few days after, but nothing major. I don't usually take the painkillers they prescribe.

Not that bad. The injection of the local anaesthetic can hurt to start with, but other than that it's not necessarily painful, just uncomfortable.

Hey guys, thanks for the info. Not so "scared" anymore..

it's one of the upper back teeth on the left side...

Well, see how it goes

Thanks again!

I've never understood why people say root canals are so terrible. Other than the anesthetic injection it's virtually painless. I've had 2, one on a front tooth and the other on a back one (sorry, I don't know the proper terms for them).

I've had 4, I think...at least 3 for sure...worst part was the dental dam...they put this plastic/metal thing around the tooth involved and over your mouth so had to breath thru nose only...which in my case, is uncomfortable...but painful? Not if the novacaine is enough and works properly...

Yeah I had one (over the course of 3 visits for a molar) and there was nothing to it as far as pain. It is totally a myth. They numb you up pretty good and all you feel is pressure. After my first visit the novacaine(??) wore off and lo and behold my tooth felt much better than it did before I walked into the dentist office. The most unpleasant part of the whole experience for me was seeing the bloody mess they pull out from the inside of your tooth hanging off the little needle file things they use. I confess to being a bit squeamish about such things.

I've had at least two...maybe three. They don't hurt much, but they take forever and you get pretty bored. They also use something in the process that smells pretty vile...don't recall what it was. Hopefully you'll get the giggle gas.

Yeah, that was pretty gross.

I've had three. No big deal really IF - IF - the doc gets you numbed up properly. I fell asleep during the last one I had, doc had to put a wedge in my jaw to hold the mouth open.

No pain during and no pain after . . .

Really not all it's supposedly cracked up to be . . .

I've had a couple. Some times it could be painfull and once or twice I felt pain for a few days after. but it is not more painfull compare to other visits to dentist.

I've had 3, none of them hurt as much as the toothache I was having but 2 of the teeth had to be removed a few years later.

The cost hurt more than the procedure...$1k for the root canal and another...I forget, but a lot, for the crown. And I need another one soon (had one already) but to echo the others--as long as they numb you up really well (and my doc did) it's just a lot of digging and drilling and poking around. Say, that sounds more fun than it really was...

The worst part for me if I needed a RC would be sitting in the chair for an hour with the rubber thing in your mouth. I have had extractions (4 baby teeth with local and lower wisdom and 4 premolar under IV sedation). When I had the local the needle didn't bother me.

Go to a good oral surgeon. I did not feel a thing at all. He told me if I felt any pain, he was doing something very wrong. This was for a large molar, and he also installed a stud for a crown. Everyone who has used this docter has said the same thing, so find one like him where you are.

Like I said, you should not feel anything at all except a slight vibration. These guys are highly skilled at pain management. A dentist working on a cavity is much worse.

KLMA330, I have had several root canals on my back teeth. First of all if the tooth is not painful, that means that the nerve may already be dead. The root can die over a long period of time if you've had a cavity that has not been taken care of.

Even if it isn't dead, it is the same as having a filling. They freeze the area before starting it and then the procedure is almost the same as a filling. Trust me, if you have had a filling in one of your back teeth before and it didn't bother you then your fine. Trust me, there is no dentist that would put you pain intentionally.

DeltaDC9 is right as noted above!!

Here is what my dentist said to me.....What hurts on the tooth? The root....The root dies ewhen it is exposed to air so how can it hurt.....My jaw was sore from keeping my mouth open.
