Interesting... I got some OS X-feel for my desktop today. I downloaded Flyakite and so far I like it. The dock is growing on me quickly, however I wouldn't recommend Flyakite to PC n00bs. They'd get absolutely desperate.

Technically it is still a beta, but I wouldn't let that put you off a download. From what I've heard, it works a treat. IIRC, the official release will come with the next revision of OS X, called "Leopard".

Quoting Aloges (Reply 2):

Nice! I may just have to try that.

If you do, make sure to back up all your data (And I mean all of it!) and set a system restore point. There are different implementations of the dock, the one I'm using is RK Launcher. In the build I downloaded with Flyakite, there were a few bugs such as Firefox minimising to the taskbar as opposed to the dock. However, you can download a nightly build (let's say "update") from their website that has solved this for me.

Then, you should minimise the Windows taskbar manually by moving the cursor to its top until that little two-sided arrow appears, obviously the taskbar must be unlocked. Click on the top of the taskbar and drag it to the bottom of the screen until it's no more than a narrow line. That way you can get it back easily and quickly once you need it. BTW, the widgets have nothing to do Flyakite, they're from the "Yahoo! Widget Engine" formerly known as Konfabulator.

However, be absolutely sure to back up everything! The changes to the GUI are massive and I think I'd be worrying if I hadn't made a complete backup of my hard drive before installing Flyakite.

As stated above, it is expected to be integrated into OS X 10.5 "Leopard" , so the incarnation of this technology for Tiger is and probably will remain a beta until the new system is out.

According to all the tests I've read so far, the "beta" status of BootCamp is more a political thing than anything; It seems to be very stable and reliable from all I've heard.

It contains:
• A firmware update which adds a BIOS-compatibility level.
• A partitioning tool for the creation of an extra Windows partition "on the fly".
• A "dual boot selector" at startup.
• A driver package for (most of) the Mac's hardware under Windows (the iSight camera is not supported under Windows).

And yes, be sure to back up all your data before installing Windows and stay aware that Windows is exactly as vulnerable on the Mac as it is on a normal PC.

Good luck and have fun with your new toy!  bigthumbsup

Say, when's that Leopard being let out of its cage? I'd heard it would be during WWDC, but I'm not exactly sure on that.

According to the official schedule, the WWDC will see the first presentation, but availability is officially planned for 2007...

No idea... my crystal ball is fogged in today...!

Apart from having to complete the usual beta phase, I guess they're trying to have some tactical maneuvering room to properly upstage the Vista release (or more probably reluctant kick out the door ).

Won't be hard to do. Die-hard PC fans will think Vista rules...anyone with decent exposure to Tiger knows different. I can't wait to see Leopard  Smile

All those put together require just a few kb to run. However, it isn't part of my startup config. I have that minimised.

You're Da Man !
A lot of people don't realize how many programs are booting on start up. I have just about everything set to manual start on demand.

I had it, but I "solved" it.

Quoting AirPacific747 (Reply 12):

No. It is caused by "Y'z Shadow", a little programme that comes with Flyakite and adds little "shadows" to the windows on your desktop. Some windows will technically be larger than what you get to see on the screen, so Y'z Shadow will add a shadow that's larger than the window you see - because the information on window size that Y'z Shadow gets says so. You'll notice the same with Windows Media Player.

I can live without the shadow effect, so I disabled Y'z shadow. You can do that in one of the Flyakite folders in your start menu, it should be "Tools". Open "Current User Settings" and disable Y'z Shadow in the "Run at Startup" box. Flyakite does need some tweaking, you'll have to try things out.
