Since last year, rubber bracelets have become a new fashion. It came first with the Yellow Livestrong bracelets and the black&white ones against racism.
Since many types have been done.
Yesterday there was some promotion for Thailand in a restaurant and to my surprise there was a Thai Airways bracelet.
I have been a fan of those bracelets ever since they came out, and I wanted to see what my fellow a.netters thought about them.

Cheers
BM
My new Thai bracelet

I still wear this bracelet from the world cup for the Argentina squad

Yes, I wear the green NSPCC bracelet, but I'm not allowed to wear it for work as we are banned from wearing them.

Some Airtours resorts have banned reps from wearing them as some people wear one's that aren't supporting a charity, so we were told not to wear them. Some resorts are allowed to wear them though.

I have 2 of those bracelets. A pink one for Breast cancer research and a yellow and blue one for Marie Curie. Don't generally wear them anymore but they are visible in my room.

I have about 4. A "Make Poverty History" one, a "beat bullying" one, a "cancer research" one and a "stamp out racism" one (which is actually two bands intertwined to show equality between black and white)

What is the purpose of wearing a rubber band?

I've seen some people wearing the Wide World of John Deere (WWJD) thingies, but they're usually made of cloth.

They remind me of these...

For many people, perhaps a majority, they are just a trend.

When I first started wearing one, Livestrong, everyone told me I'll be taking it off in a few months just like they did because it was simple that, a trend.

Little did I know that in the next months, I'd be getting a new one, a Children's Hospital of Philadelphia "Hope" bracelet. This one was in support and my little brother who was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor at the age of 9. Everyone in the family wore one, as well as his friends. Yes, they sold for $1, but many people we know paid upwards of $100 just for one to support the cause.

For the proceeding 16 months we all wore them and my brother wore his, too, through all the radiation, chemo, hospital visits, MRIs, etc etc etc. He passed away on April 11 of this year, wearing his, surrounded by his family wearing ours.

To this day I still wear my two bracelets. I have gone through a few of each over the years as they just eventually give out and snap. One day the Livestrong one will come off, but my "Hope" bracelet will stay on me forever because my brother will have his on forever more.

Excuse me for the novel, just giving my perspective on these bracelets.

No I do not wear them. I'll keep my opinion to myself about them.

Adam Carolla was talking about them on his radio show a few weeks ago and said they are starting to show up in porn movies. I'll leave it to your imagination what the brown bracelet is for.

I wear an olive colored USO/ Support Our Troops one that I have been wearing for quite some time now and have no plans to take off. Generally I'm pretty out on the wristbands since it seems that every piddly thing in the world has a wristband these days.. but I think there are one or two causes worth getting behind.

Nope - When they started it was fine, a decent cause etc... then every cause had a bracelet, and a number of shops started selling ones matching the popular causes but without any proceeds going to them - at this point it was evident that they were becoming a fashion accessory rather than a statement!

S12PPL, I have great sympathy for you and your mother (and family); I lost my mother to a heart attack. I have also lost friends to breast cancer and other such afflictions.

I just think a cheesy rubber bracelet is...ugggh...really horrible. It has become a fashion statement for those who have no idea what it means. Can't we just find a way to promote research and donation without the need to make it "cool?"

Best,

Get them here.

Even though you can only buy them in 10 packs, consider it a $10 donation to the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and that way you have some backups in case they break, and they can also be given to friends/family. Its what I did, and they also give you some postcards.

I have the yellow Livestrong one, a burnt orange Go Horns (University of Texas) one, and an aqua Royal Resorts (Cancun) Hurricane Wilma Employee Relief Fund one as well. I wear all three of them.

Cheers,
Cameron

Okay, legitimate question here--if you buy them directly from the Foundation, since it's a charity donation, can you list it as such on your taxes?

Asking the wrong person, considering I don't pay my family's taxes, but after a little digging around on the LAF Store's website, I found this:

The Lance Armstrong Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is a public charity. Donations made to the Lance Armstrong Foundation are tax deductible, however the amount paid for merchandise is generally not tax deductible. Consult your tax advisor for more information.

I have a blue Pilots for Kids organization band, a Livestrong band, and a swirled yellow and blue band that says "M Go Blue for Mott" on it, a campaign to raise money for a new children's hospital at the University of Michigan. I don't regularly wear any of them.

As someone has already said there are just too many of them. Or rather there are just too many of them to really earn any individual charity any real money, if you feel the need to show your support for a particular religion, race or charity then they are ideal, like a lot of things though their original purpose (earning Livestrong, which I think was the org which came up with them, popularity and increasing its finances) has long been lost.
