I love pasties. Quick, cheap, and easy to make and eat.

Here's my recipe for Americanized pasties. Heavy on the meat and potatoes and light on the rutabaga.

Sirloin Steak Pasties  cloudnine

2 lbs shortcrust pastry
16 oz of trimmed sirloin steak
10 1½" red potatoes, unpeeled
1 medium Vidalia onion, peeled
6 oz rutabaga
2 oz frozen salted butter
2 oz real bacon bits
2 beaten eggs
Salt and pepper

Cut steak, potatoes, onion, and rutabaga into ½" cubes and place in separate bowls.

Roll out the pastry to form a 20" circle. Cut out four 8" circles and place each on a floured surface.

Place equal amounts of cubed potato onto the center of each pastry circle. Place a layer of diced rutabaga on top of the potatoes. Do the same with the onion, then the diced steak. Sprinkle bacon bits on top of the steak. Sliver equal amounts of butter onto each pile of ingredients. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Dampen the edges of each pastry circle and fold in half to form a semi-circle. Pinch and turn the edge over to make a rope like effect. Turn each pastry so the pinched edge is toward the ceiling. Brush each pastry with a liberal amount of beaten egg and place on a well-greased baking sheet.

Preheat oven to 425° F (220° C). Bake for 10 minutes, then lower the temperature setting to 350° F (180° C) and bake for an additional 30 minutes.

Eat hot or cold.

Pasties are fantastic
Cheap as common muck and really filling. Perfect for the beach....
My favourite is a proper standard cornish or cheese and bacon

Thanks

When I was growing up, there was a Russian bakery in SF we used to go to for piroshkys, and they were so good! When I first had a pasty, I thought how funny that the Brits were making Russian food. I'm gonna try Mark's recipe to see how close I can get to what I remember as so delicious as a kid.

That gave me an idea for the next time I make funnel cakes. I'll use dark brown food coloring when I mix the batter, a larger opening in the funnel, and skip the powdered sugar topping.

Can you imagine this being dark brown and without the powdered sugar? It reminds me of the time the neighbor's daschund ate a 2-pound box of Fannie Farmer chocolates.

Hey Hey Hey. A thread about pasties isn't complete without a Cornishman to give his expert opinion.

And much to my horror its getting derailed. I'd NEVER dream of hijacking such a serious thread, so time to get it back on track  Wink

Pop Tarts - NOOOO. I'm sure they taste very nice, but they're not on the culinary level of a nice pasty.

Airpacific - sour grapes ? No we don't put sour grapes in pasties - pork and apple maybe  Wink

Now back to the pasties. Well its always been said you can't get a really good pasty out of Cornwall, however may I recommend West Cornwall Pasty Co. pasties - on sale all over the UK, they're really quite good I have to admit.

Now I'll have to ask my mum for my granny's old recipe - passed on from generation to generation. She used to make them twice a week and were the size of dinner plates, best steak in them only mind.

Oh and it should also be mentioned that a good pasty is best served with a nice bit of traditional HP brown sauce  yummy

Last I checked. They also make these things they call "Go-Tarts," which are these narrow little Pop Tarts wrapped up like granola bars. Not bad for a quick snack, and only about 140 Kcalories.

That whole clique thing is something that was invented by users like you. I've never complained about not being inside a clique. And if you disagree, please link me to a thread where I am complaining about that I am outside a clique.

If there are this many people getting on your case, don't you think it might be worthwhile to step back and see what you're doing to cause it?

Yes but what exactly do you want me to do now? Turn back time and prevent myself from posting it? Sorry but that is impossible. I already admitted that the point was too vague to start a thread about it.

Now why don't you give it a rest yourself and go out and get some fresh air?

I would respectfully suggest this is getting beyond a joke. So it may be a good idea to close this thread before it rockets off at another tangent and things start getting said that are both inflamatory and hurtful.

I totally agree LEts talk pastries again

Or pasties. With pictures, of course.

Now I'll have to ask my mum for my granny's old recipe - passed on from generation to generation. She used to make them twice a week and were the size of dinner plates,

Back then you could still get mule  Smile

Ah....once again the voice of intelligence and reason!

Don't you start encouraging him - he gets ideas !

Quoting Cornish (Reply 70):
I'm here !

See - what did I tell you ? He's off again...

Quoting Skidmarks (Reply 74):
me old wurzle

Wurzle (n. old Eng.) - wrinkled, rank smelling root vegetable of indeterminate genus.

Quoting Skidmarks (Reply 74):
is like corned beef hash without the corned beef

In other words, infinitely improved (corned beef =  yuck  )

Quoting Skidmarks (Reply 77):
Another one for JGPH1A's therapy course!

Beyond all hope of redemption this one - even my expertise cannot save him now.

Quoting Skidmarks (Reply 81):
You haven't lived until you have been therapised by JGPH1A!

Well, modesty forbids, but I've had no complaints  Smile

Quoting Cornish (Reply 83):
Have another Big Mac. mmmm i'm feeling better already.
Have another one - yes i really am recovering.
Have another one then. mmmm yes this therapy really is very good.
Have another......

Typical - jealousy ! You fail to appreciate the resonant karmic harmony that comes from a plate of chips with mayonnaise. It brings the soul into cosmic balance. You sir, are a Philistine.

Quoting Skidmarks (Reply 89):
Bllody Cornishmen will do anything to sell pasty's these days!!

Rabbit is at least an improvement on mule.

Quoting Mhodgson (Reply 90):
Call me a heathen, but I don't like pasties.

You are not a heathen, my son. You are a member of the Elect, the Chosen Few granted actual taste and discrimination, unlike these pagan mule-eating Picts.

Oh damn! I have read it as Pastries the whole time. My bad  Sad
No wonder the "Pastries" on the first picture looked so strange then.

I've never complained about not being inside a clique. And if you disagree, please link me to a thread where I am complaining about that I am outside a clique

The Non-av. Clientel.... (by AirPacific747 Aug 19 2006 in Non Aviation)

"but in my opinion, it seems like you're not a part of the group"

"The way I see it, seems like a small closed clientel"

"Even you're in or you're out. I've also noticed that its always the same small clientel of people."

You're making this pretty easy....

Okay, a significant part of this discussion took an incredibly wrong turn. Unfortunately I cannot remove all the posts without totally gutting everything here so this discussion will be locked.

AirPacific747, I understand you have certain concerns and problems. You had a whole thread to vent about them previously, but bringing it into other unrelated discussions, even if in jest at first, is not the best way to sort things out. If you still have things to say or get off your chest regarding this issue please send an e-mail to moderators@airliners.net and I'll give you some of my time to discuss things.

Everyone else, don't humour or perpetuate severely off-topic discussion. Simply suggest delete and/or ignore, because this happens.

Someone start a part II please.
