With all the drinking and partying that airline and aviation folk in general like to do, I was wondering if there are any 12 steppers out there in A.Net land? (i.e. AA, NA, CMA, etc)

Did it get out of hand for anyone? Need to "take a break" or get help?

GKirk, MYT332 and Daleaholic have all started attending AA meetings so I hear......

All joking aside, no not me personally. I would hate to see anyone going through this really, it's quite sad.

While it might be initially, once you sober up and get into a program like AA, there can be a great deal of happiness and hope. It's obviously not a certainty, though.

Congrats man - that's awesome. I'll be hitting 11 months in another week and a half.

The first few months are tough at times. But it gets better every day. That's what AA is for...to help get you over the speed bumps. Everyone's recovery is different. For me, the thought of drinking is as repulsive as eating a pile of dog shit.

Lent just started like 9 days ago. I thought about giving up alcohol....but in the end I asked myself, why not just give up breathing oxygen? That is when I realized that I will be walking around with GKirk and Sabena332 with a oxygen bottle and a pushcart one day.

That's the key right there. Just like everyone's patterns of abuse were different. As they're fond of saying, you can identify with each other, but don't compare experiences.

Wish I felt the same way. But luckily for me, it's been pretty easy to slip into the habit of NOT drinking. It doesn't even cross my mind most of the time.

Crystal Meth Annonymous. (CMA)

Congrats to Vik and Mark and your journey in recovery; I'm at 4 months now. I had 3+ years at one time after crystal meth kicked my butt big time. Then I thought I could handle the booze. And I did ok for awhile. But then one leads back to the other and you get the picture.

I wish you the best. My brother is in prison for natural life because of crystal. I have serious problems with people who want to legalize hard drugs.

As for my self, I have done prison time for my non-violent alcohol problem. At one time I did attend AA voluntarily and I currently do attend on a basis of being required to and also because I like it. As for "working the program" and staying sober, I am a failure. I have attended over 500 meeetings so I am not unfamiliar, just unsucessful. I have several issues with the program which do not work for me. I know, I know- I am supposed to work the program and the program is not supposed to work me. But the fact is that of the three sponsors I've tried, two of them are ALWAYS talking about the program. If they offer to take me out to dinner or coffee, they yammer on about the program the whole time. I have a business life that is very important to me and (although it may be unfounded) I am at the stage where the second A is very important to me. I realize that many become proud of who they are, but I am not there yet.

This and a few other things have lead me to believe that I am constitutionaly unable. I would be honored to discuss this with respectful members though.

I remember one thread where someone called AssistChiefMark "weak" because he was in AA and it really pissed me off. I have nothing but respect for people who work the program correctly and are a benefit to other addicts. I forget who that person was but I would love to know so that I may let them know how I feel.

Well I'm off to have a brew!  Smile

Of course. But the problem is that if you can't stop putting it in your body, what do you do? With, all do respect, besides my brother and myself I have a friend who has killed a man while working as an escort while being a heroin addict. She is awaiting her trial for first degree murder. I have seen these types of things over and over. Now, although the punishment should not be diminished, do you not have any compassion for addicts?

I also would like to mention that five years ago she was a top awarded RN.

One of the promises state that "we will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it"

While the second "A" in AA is important in alot of ways and I don't walk around bringing it up. I do keep this part of my life very private at work. However I am not ashamed of it and would "come out" so to speak to a co-worker if I felt he/she would be receptive to my experience/strength and hope and would benefit from it. Not just for gossip.

I don't know what your profession is but there are unpublished closed meetings for people who need double protection on anonymity. (i.e. doctors, pilots, etc)

I'm sorry to hear about your brother and your RN friend. I'm glad I was able to stop before any serious consequences.

You will "get" the program when you are ready. It takes alot of pain to be ready to be Honest, Open Minded and Willing to really do the 12 steps.

Congratulations! Whatevery YOU did for the last 4 months.... Do it again.... You'll be going on a year....

Somebody told me that when I hit three months sober and I could relate to it.... That was in December 1989...

When I quit drinking I had a high school diploma and a pickup truck that was half paid for.... Since then I've gotten two college degrees. I have two vehicles, paid for, a house that's more than half paid for, and more toys than I can count. But it's not about the stuff. Most of all, I have peace in my life.

Quoting Fumanchewd (Reply 9):

I thought that for many years.... For some reason I've yet to fathom, in 1989 it worked for me... so far... You're past the hardest part; that's admitting the problem.... Good luck...

For myself, and I can only speak for myself, I had to change my whole way of life... I don't go out to clubs and not drink; I simply don't go to clubs. I filled my former party hours with productive hours; for me, that was going to school. I worked full time, and got an education. I found other outlets to have fun. Amazingly, all of a sudden I could afford to take a couple nice vacations each year, something that for some reason had never been possible. I reached a point where I stopped working at being sober, and started working on living life. It wasn't a clearly defined point, but somewhere along the line I passed it. As I said, that's only me. Each of you will have a different journey...

When I saw this thread and read some entries, I had to stop and figure out how long it's been. 17+ years and each and every day I still thank God and ask for His help getting through just one more day.... Good luck to all of you....

Best of luck to you. In the end, AA won't be for everyone. All I can suggest is that you keep going to meetings - maybe one day it will be for you. But I hope that things work out for you in one way or another.

I actually had to think about it for a long while before I even posted in this thread. But honestly, with people that I know, I'm pretty open about it. While staying sober has not been too difficult thus far, it's still a pretty big part of my life (especially considering that I'm 25 years old, and a lot of my friends are pretty hard partyers, as I used to be). And, as it's a part of my life, I don't mind sharing it with people.

Quoting ADXMatt (Reply 15):

Absolutely. I'm in the middle of writing my 4th step right now, and it's a horrible process. I'm sort of dreading when I'm done and have to go back and reread what I wrote. But it's an important step.

You're an inspiration to us all. My sponsor hit 20 years (!!!) a month or so ago. At the meeting that morning, I said to him, "I'm 19 years and 3 months behind you, and I hope to stay 19 years and 3 months behind you." Was all I could really think to say, aside from congratulations.

To all of you who posted, thanks for the inspiration. Anything and everything helps.

I knew I had a problem 20 years before I did something about it. I wish I'd addressed it sooner, but I was afraid to stop drinking. Sounds strange, but that's the insanity part of being a drunk.

The 4th step was tough for me, too. I rewrote it a dozen times. Once I did my 5th step, the 4th step made more sense.

I could write more, but I'm tired. Maybe tomorrow.

Mark
