So, Senator Mitchell's report on performance enhancing drugs in MLB is due tomorrow and rumor has it that there are 50 active and retired players on the list. I also have read that some of them are current free agents, which will make things interesting for off season signings. Who do you think is on the list? It seems like there are always tons of guys that you don't know who are always getting caught, so we will see lots of those. Here are my guesses of some the big names we might see:

Current Players:
Barry Bonds
Sammy Sosa
Roger Clemens
Jason Giambi (admitted)

Past Players (depending on how far they go back)
Jose Canseco (admitted)
Mark McGwire
Jeff Bagwell
Rafael Palmeiro (failed drug test)
Ken Caminiti (admitted, deceased)

It will be release today at 2pm ET, expect to see All-Stars, MVPs, even Hall-of-Fame caliber players named.

ESPN is doing like 5 hours of coverage on this

Apologies, but the morbid curiosity portion of me can't wait to find out.

Oh, Players Association, quit whining about not getting an advanced copy of the report...what did you expect, seeing how you refused to cooperate in the investigations?

I wouldn't be surprised that the likes of Andruw Jones, Roger Clemens, Eric Gagne, and several other players whose statistics suddenly spiked up in the last 15 years get implicated. It appears that ESPN Radio talk show host Colin Cowherd's hunch based on unusual spike in performance stats was correct--players with these spikes were likely users of various forms of steriods and human growth hormone.

I don't know why it would. I am not sure what advantage you would really get on the NBA court. Pure strength is not the most important characteristic for a NBA player. Plus, one of the side effects is decreased flexibility, which I think is very important in basketball.

It is pretty sad how they keep his name around as one to throw around. Caminiti, who I was never a fan of because he spent his best years with the Dodgers' number 2 rival, The Padres, was a tortured man for whom steroid use was the least of his problems. His battle with cocaine addiction ultimately ended both his career and his life at way too early an age, and it is sad that they keep using him as a way of saying "see, everyone must be on steroids." Whatever anyone thinks of him, he seemed to truly love the game when he was on the field and played his heart out, which was evidenced by his 3 straight Gold Gloves that everyone seems to forget about.

I am basing my opinion based on seeing him play for years as a Houston fan. I am not being blind to the signs just because I liked him as a player (kind of like every Barry Bonds fan on earth). He displayed all of the characteristics - got big, long term injury issues, etc. When his named showed up on the early list, every sports radio person in Houston said they were not surprised. All Houston fans that I know agree that he probably did it. His association with Caminiti did not help his case in people's eyes either.

Drug use. Caminiti's issues were related to long term alcoholism and cocaine abuse and he died due to acute overdose of cocaine and opiates. Steroids were the least of his troubles.

Quoting COrocks (Reply 30):

"The characteristics." Just what do you think those are? Bags had 1 really bad injury, the one that ended his career, and he likely would have recovered from that and played again had the Astros not been so greedy as to want to collect on the insurance policy they had out on his contract. Other than that, he was one of the most durable players in baseball after he started wearing the protective glove on his left hand. Further, he really didn't grow all that much. Players always will get bigger as they get older and their metabolism slows down. This can actually be a good thing and a slower metabolism combined with a strong workout plan will mean bigger muscles.

Young Bagwell.

Older Bagwell

As you can see, not much of a difference.

This lot can either come clean, or people will form their own opinions.

Every single one of them should not be allowed to be enshrined in the HOF.

Barry Bonds should have the asterisk placed next to his name if not have his record dismissed. Before certain individuals get their knickers in an uproar, I don't care if they are Dominican, Venezuelan, Mexican, Cuban, Asian, Black, WASPs whatever. They only thing they deserve is scorn.

Actually, that can definitely happen from a combination of not lifting and not eating as much. My normal weight for years hovered around 20-25 pounds less than Bagwell's playing weight of 195, but I could easily put on 10 pounds with 3-6 months of hard training and increased caloric intake, and I have never taken drugs. Playing and training at the level Bagwell does, combined with the fact that he is older, a 30 pound delta isn't much, especially when you consider how little he likely worked out during the injury year.

First of all, how much 'truth' is there in this report. Very few players would speak about their or others use of performance enhancing drugs (PED's) due to a code of 'ometa' like in the Mafia to never turn in your friends in the group and fear of criminal prosecution. The sports media made sure any knowledge was buried. The MLB owners and players profited hugely by the use of PED's. The fans loved the 'juiced' play.
The real losers will be the intrigue of records and the players who used these drugs. For players, even if they didn't use any PED's, they will never be seen as clean. Then there is the possible long term health effects including shorter lives and who knows what they may have done to children they fathered from the use of PED's. Let us hope the Mitchell Report leads to stronger PED testing and an attitude by all that the use of PED is not only illegal and dangerous, but immoral and hurts the integrity of the game.

Maybe, but as long as Selig is around, I don't think so. Selig is too soft and all he cares about is revenue for the MLB. Selig is the main root of the problem, I say this because of the fact that he has allowed this to happen and did not take any action against it. He didn't have the guts to get rid of Barry Bonds in the last two years. Why? It all boils down to MONEY.

I hope this is a wake-up call to the MLB world. Those active players who were named in Mitchell's report should be banned for a year without pay. And remove Selig from the Commish office.

I've always said that I believed Bonds was being the scapegoat when the entire industry, including the pitchers he was facing, were juiced. So now that the list is public, I say to all those that wanted to throw Bonds under the bus that they must do so consistently. They all cheated, they all get labeled.

Fair enough. As I think about it more, either all of these guys like Clemens, McGwire, Sosa, Bonds, Palmeiro get in the HOF, or all of them don't. At first I thought the concept of a separate wing dedicated to players from this "era" was absurd, but in some ways it might be the only way to recognize the best players among a tainted era.

All this report proves is that you still need natural abilities to play well. Some of those pitchers could not strike out a little leaguer and some of those hitters could not hit water if they fell out of a boat.
