Share your thoughts about Ham - I especially like the kind you get in Germany (Westpfalen) and Holland - not smoky. Another favorite is the Italian Proscuittini - ham coated with pepper.
So what's the best ham to have with a nice loaf of crusty bread? Do you like cooked or baked ham?

For me it's a spiral cut, maple smoked ham drizzled with maple syrup as it's slow baked in the oven. What an awesome flavour when it's done.

Pancetta and Prosciutto for me. I simply like cured ham because of its salty flavour.
I prefer Prosciutto from Parma if available, but I know of a factory owned by an Italian guy where we sometimes buy stuff that we'd get even more expensively at regular shops, which does good Prosciutto, though I doubt it's officially recognised as Prosciutto di Parma (the Prosciutto has to be evaluated by certain people to be get the seal of authenticity on the whole ham, I doubt they'd make the trip from Parma to Costa Rica just for that). Anyway, the best way to eat Prosciutto and Pancetta is thinly sliced and on some bread spread with real margarine or real butter (not that low-fat crap like "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" or stuff that looks like butter but isn't).

That's 'Abendsbrot' style! I remember sliced Bauernbrot with butter and Johannisbeer jam - schmeckt gut!

Indeed (except for the jam part, I'm not really a fan of jam because it's too sweet). It's also good as a short snack during work or when going to school. However, I forgot to mention this, if you do as I say, slice some bread and put real butter or margarine and then a slice or two of pancetta or prosciutto, it's best if the bread is Ciabatta (though it's also not bad on flat bread that you'd get from any Turkish food store or on a freshly made Focaccia).

As for ham, I will go with any type that is salty and/or smoky. So proscuttio or any cured ham is good. Honey-baked is not bad either, but I just love anything with a little saltiness.

Thanks! I have not developed a taste for Italian bread because of the seasonings. My favorite breads are more 'Continental' - so delicious you can eat it just with butter. I go crazy over Dutch breakfasts (and German 'Fruhstucks').

Can I assume someone was watching Good Eats last night?
I'm a sucker for basic city ham because it's readily available and darn good... Prosciutto, Serrano/Jamon, Virginia are all great.

Ciabatta isn't seasoned at all (at least not extra seasoned). It has a thick but somewhat crunchy crust when fresh (which makes it slightly harder to chew than other breads), plus on the crust there's still lots of excess flour.

Darn, was there a 'Ham' episode? I see if I can find a rerun...wish someone would invent a TiVo that would go back in time...

If it's ham, I'll eat it.
For me, heaven is a fresh baked buttermilk biscuit (made with lard, not vegetable shortening) with a nice slice of country ham nestled in between.

A quick check of the Food Network site (yes, it is one of my bookmarks), doesn't show it coming on in the near future, but the recipes for city ham and country ham are on the site:
