After 19 years Mad Dog leaves the Mike and the Mad Dog show for Sirius Satellite radio, anyone who lives in the Tri-State area and is even somewhat interested in sports has listened to their show.

I've personally been a listener since 1996.

This is huge for WFAN, they lost Imus last year and now Mike and the Mad Dog.

Those are some big shoes to fill. I like Francesa, but there are some duos that are more than the sum of their parts, and he and Russo were one of them (Kay and Sterling would be another - neither are as good now that they have gone their seperate ways). Him doing the show alone isn't going to be nearly as good.

And Russo...who is the genius that hired this clown??? He butchers the english language, not so smart on sports, and somehow he gets a radio show for 19 years???

These two were only good at inflating the ego's of certain NY sports fans. They lacked any complete comprehension of any sport, outside NY teams. And even with that they were highly reactionary and very short sighted. Russo was a complete and utter moron with the IQ deserving of serving Big Macs. Couldn't have happened any to a better commentating team.

Love them or hate them, Mike and the Mad Dog was a major institution in terms of New York City radio. The breakup of this team is truly the end of an era in American radio history.

Frankly, I think sports talk radio is starting to gravitate to something not so "provincial" like this former show; note that ESPN Radio's Mike & Mike in the Morning has done very well in the US Eastern time zone, bolstered especially by its TV simulcast on ESPN2/ESPN2 HD (I believe it's the highest-rated show on WEPN, the radio station owned by ESPN in New York City).

It's a shame because there's a lot to talk about;

1.) Yankees possibly missing the playoffs for the first time in 14 years
2.) Mets playoffs or another collapse
3.) Giants defending Super Bowl Champions
4.) Brett Favre and the Jets

I find Mike Francesca and his "hand wave" very arrogant, but he knows his sh*t. As did Mad Dog, I can see Mad Dog Chris Russo doing well at Sirius with a National audience. Mike is a New York sports analyst through and through. I used to travel around in my car a lot for work, these guys kept me awake on those long drives sitting in traffic across the tri-state area.

WFAN is in trouble, no more Imus, no more Mike and the Mad Dog, and the Mets deal is apparently up soon and they are shopping that around with ESPN radio bidding it's going to be a rough go for the FAN.

Apparently YES will continue to simulcast the now Mike Francessa show until the end of the year, then rumors are that Madison Square Garden Network will broadcast Mike's new show. Apparently the show might even move to the Garden, WFAN is supposed to move to Manhattan from Astoria sometime in late 2009.

Man WFAN must not be too happy. They lost 2 of their top shows in about a year. I for one don't really care about them "Splitting up" I think sometimes those two would become pretty obnoxious. But they are for sure big in the city.

I never really cared for this duo while I was growing up, but they were definitely an institution in the tri-state area. I know it's kind of a nitpicky thing, but listening to them talk about golf (especially during the weeks of the 4 majors) made me retch, because they didn't know what the fuck they were talking about.
