So as I near my ten year airliners.net anniversary (*bows* thank you, thank you, no really thank you), I was wondering who some of the other oldies are still around. Granted, I took a nice little break from the forums, but now that I'm back (every now and then), I am curious who has been around a long time and even who has been around the longest. I'll start.

I joined airliners.net on February 2, 2000 at the spritely young age of 16! That's 9 years and 356 days! Whew.... where's my cane?

While only a registered member for almost 6 years, I contributed photos back in 1999 and read the forums for a few years before finally having the balls to register and actively participate in discussions. This place was intimidating back then. Back when many industry professionals with years of experience participated before eventually being run off by "know-it-all" 13-15 year-olds. And then, if you posted something that had already been asked, or forget a period in your sentence...BAM! Everyone jumped all over you.

But yeah, while my screen name doesn't say so, I have been here for over 10 years.

I joined (under my original ID) on January 27th 2000, so my 10 year anniversary is in just a few days.

I was once one of the more prolific photo uploaders on A-Net. Unfortunately I since moved to a place where the only planes are Delta, Delta, Delta, Delta, United, Delta, United, Continental...

I joined Dec 12, 1999

I had my ten year anniversary this past December. Started lurking around sometime in 1998 or so. I kept wanting to see the first pic of an AA 777 as I would be flying on one the summer of 1999. So, it was just before AA got their first 777, whenever that was.

When did this site become a pay site btw? Being senior-citizen here has it's benefits I suppose.  Wink

You got me by a month, I joined in March, 2000 during my Senior Year of College. I've actually been visiting the site since '98 but I only looked at the photos and never participated in discussions. I remember very early on the general aviation discussion forums were much more technical in nature.

I guess I joined in 2000. I don't look, but I know it says on my profile. The same time I joined this board, there was another guy in high school who was on, too. He lived near Green River Community College, I think and I lived near the casino. We never actually met, but he did meet my then partner.

At least DL/NW has different airplanes (737, A320, 747/757/767/777, etc). WestJet just flies the 737NG. At YYC, it's like this: WestJet, WestJet, WestJet, Jazz, Air Canada, WestJet, WestJet, WestJet, WestJet, oh look, British Airways/KLM/Lufthansa! Finally, some variety!

Anyway, I'm still a youngun, at 4 years, 217 days, having joined (free) June 19, 2005, a month after my 15th birthday, being First Class since December 25, 2006, and having read A.Net forums since before the FLAIRPORT debacle in Non-Av back in 2005.

My current username says I joined in November 2001, I am sure I joined before that under another username but I can't remember.

I was also an avid user of the chatroom.

I was also lurking the site since 1998, one day whilst having my english lessons my teacher started talking about the new (back then) 777, my interest for aviation was just developing and I have never heard of the 777 before, so full of curiosity I went on the net and looked on altavista (no google back then) for pics of the 777... and i was neatly redirected to this site.

Ever since I visit the site frequently, made some good friends and learned a lot and laughed a lot, never had trouble with anyone and just enjoy the site.

For some reason I get a real feeling of nostalgia when I think back to the days before paid-for signups. I can still remember the shit storm that ensued at the very suggestions that premium (i.e. paid-for) memberships MIGHT become a reality.

Mind you, things have changed drastically in the last 10 years or so. Things aren't half as much fun as they once were. I remember the days when we could waste a whole afternoon at work participating in many pointless threads, treating the forum almost like an instant messenger, with ridiculous amounts of slap-stick humour and innuendo.

I've even been the star of a few threads myself, such as the time I got my shoelaces caught in the castor of my office chair, or when I stapled myself to the photocopier.

I remember forgetting the name of the site and having to google it in order to find it and spending hours looking at all the photos, then getting all excited for my 13th birthday so that I could finally join, the my 16th because I could change my age bracket (Oh, and drive a vehicle...)

I also remember when the front page banner was changed from the 744 w/switches to the current one.. That was a debate!

Now I'm in college and spend my days flying, cruising a.net, and cruising for chicks, unfortunately being more successful with the former two than the latter :P

By reading above, many of us miss "the good old days" on Anet. A bit of a shame actually as this also means that many members with lots of knowledge is not so keen on posting anymore.
On a personal level I have (more or less) stopped posting in tech/ops as the knowledge that used to post in there is gone. Not to say that there isn't any current members around that knows probably just as much, but still.

Well, I'm here for just a shade over 10 years; I still remember my first post - something to do with the JAL 747 "SUD" domestic fleet ...

It's been a huge asset to me - knowing that there were people as mad about aviation as me (some even moreso); even though I've visited A.net almost every day for the last 10+ years, I still find it amazing that I can sit here, in my living room in Jersey and talk to people from NZ, the US, South Africa, Japan etc, about all aspects of aviation. It really has added a huge amount to my enjoyment of my hobby.

The minuses:
- I still hate the "Respect Rating" thing
- I wish I could get a photo accepted to A.net sometime; I have 1,300+ on the "evil" site, but not yet one here! Maybe someday ...

I've been here since 1997 back before there were forums. I registered this s/n in Sept. 2000, but had a couple other ones before this. It was a fantastic website up until 2002ish, then it seemed to have gone downhill. I remember when Johan started the screening thing. He couldn't keep up, so he had a few of us do it for him. I would screen with AirNikon (RIP) often late into the night, bullshitting with each other on IM. It was great fun. We used to post under usernames that were "screener6" etc. It was fun.

Wow golly, I joined in December 1999 I think. I mainly joined to upload my photos, but it wasn't too long before the quality standards of uploads outpaced my budget for good equipment. I started getting too many rejections, and just lost the motivation. You can check out my old uploads, 100 neat images mostly from the late 90's but of course the quality is crap...

My username was based on the fact that I was a student pilot at CYTZ at the time. My private license isn't current, though. Other than that, I have stayed pretty quiet on the boards but I do quite enjoying writing trip reports.

Things aren't half as much fun as they once were. I remember the days when we could waste a whole afternoon at work participating in many pointless threads, treating the forum almost like an instant messenger, with ridiculous amounts of slap-stick humour and innuendo.

I remember those days and I agree with you. Those were the days where many members spent more time in the non-aviation forum than any other forum.

The quality is just fine; I prefer photographs in their original state, instead of after they've been edited all to hell and back. Original photos show the true gift of a photographer...not the Photoshopped substitutes that the 'screeners' seem to prefer. I use an old point and shoot digital and by THEIR standards, my pics would never be accepted, because I haven't edited them all to crap.

Amen!

There are probably a lot of good and rare photos that have missed the database as a result. They used to make exceptions for rare, hard to find and old vintage photos. Not sure if that's the case now.

Those are great photos and the quality is NOT crap. I especially like the Olympic 747-200 and Air Transat L1011.
My contribution of the Cubana IL-62 interior isn't the greatest quality but it's the only interior shot before they changed their interiors.

It would seem that the best way to get images on airliners.net if you don't have the quality equipment is to get rare or first shots. I can proudly say that's how I got my images up, like the first shot of the interior of a British Aerospace Jetstream 41.

I am getting a blank (white) page. Very strange! I've never see that with another archived A.net thread so I guess that it is a bug. Why should the mods or admins block a thread that was perfectly ok and not a flamefest? Just deleting it would be easier.

It's been that way for a long time by now; My guess had always been that it might have been for fear of the bandwidth it might consume, but I doubt it'll really have an impact today with bandwidth costs being substantially lower now and references to this thread relatively rare.

Some of the discussions were like drunken ragers after last call. Anyway, I still manage to get posts deleted so this must be one dog that doesn't learn new tricks. Interesting point, as I was also under the impression that there were members signing up already in -98, right?
Looks like the counting starts at May 17 1999.

The forums came online right around then. The site didn't have them in its infancy. Heck I remember Pictures of Modern Airliners in 1994! I discovered a link to it on one of the old Compuserve forums. Yeesh, that takes me back.

Around that time, yes, but they were (or "it was"?) active before I signed up, otherwise I'd have had no reason to join.

May 18, 1999 is the date listed in my profile, but I joined a year or two before that. That is the date that the new forum started. My user name has always been L1011. I tried to make it L-1011, but the old forum software only permitted numbers and letters, so I had to settle for L1011. Other user names I considered were DC-7B, B727-225, and Whisperjet.

Did this site used to be called that? I remember something like that, or I could be just making myself remember something.

I don't think it went as far back as 1994, but when it first came online in 1997-1998, I believe it had a different name, albeit a temporary name.
